This really got on my nerves.

I got a big speech from a family member how Royce should be housebroken by now. He had a wee-wee accident and he's all of about 12 weeks. "Really he's to old to be doing this. None of MY dogs EVER had accidents at his age." and then was told how to housetrain a dog in what I consider to be too negative Confused Of course everyone dotes on T-Bone and his manners.. so I casually mention T-Bone had accidents well past Royce's age and housetrained fine and I was the one to housetrain him, so I know how to do it. The topic wouldn't be dropped and another member joined in explaining to me how to clean up a spot (DUH) I know they mean well but they got downright rude about Royce. "He's just choosing to go in the house" and "You need to be the leader and teach him".

    sigh.

Just had to vent a little bit. I feel like he is on track and he can't be considered too old for this stuff. Am I wrong?

These are the same so-called experts who know everything...about nothing at all.  Just ignore them.

Gypsy had accidents off and on until she was about four months old. I would say this is more common than being trained at just a few weeks!

Yep.  Both Nikon and Pan took a while (and I took them out every 10-15 minutes while awake, but their bladders are so "young" that when they have to go they just GO, there's no holding it or warning system until they are older).  I'd say at about 4 months it was like a lightbulb went off, and they went from having multiple accidents a day to nothing.  Occasionally there would be an accident but from 4 months on it was my fault.  Pan had two accidents at our new house (6 months).

Wouldn't it have been perfect if Royce had peed in one of those "experts" shoes?  Devil  Maybe they would have left early.

I agree that people like those aren't worth arguing with.  I've housetrained lots of puppies and adult dogs and there's no timeline that fits all.  You're doing fine and so is Royce.

What about next time they comment, say, "Oh, thanks for your opinion," then ask, "Say, how did you potty train your children?" or, even better, "What's the best way to potty train a human baby?" Then sit batch and watch while they argue with each other over pull-ups vs. diapers vs. letting them run in the nude vs. rewards vs. age-specific markers vs..... :-p

Kash is 3.5 months now and his schedule is now quite predictable - if mom and dad are supervising!! If not, and he needs to go? Well, he'll go. And I wouldn't blame him!  The biggest one for us is catching him as soon as he's done eating, as he poops right after he eats (not that typical "20-30 minutes after as is often quoted). But it's so easy to just want to stir the supper pot, or put the dishes in the dishwasher, or water that plant by the sink, and then realize that you are 0.004 seconds too late. *G* Housetraining is truly about training the people, the dogs are always happy to go along!

Accidents are bound to happen, and while some can claim errorless housetraining, I say don't sweat it. Royce will get there when his body and maturity are ready!

It took a year before Maze was 100% trustworthy. I think at 12 weeks, Royce is doing just fine. Smile

He's 12 weeks! I agree with everyone else, I am sure you are well on track and doing the right things - don't worry about self-proclaimed "experts" telling you he should be housebroken by now.

It took us almost a year before Sadie was 100% - I think that was a combination of us being first time dog owners, her being a beagle, her hating rain, whatever. With Timmy - it was MUCH quicker, I forget exactly when he was 100% but it was fast - whether that was due to having Sadie to follow, us knowing more of what to do, I have no idea. My point is, every dog will be different - you are doing a great job with Royce :)

Typically these same people ALSO have children who were potty trained by age 1...that now do not speak to them or treat them like doo doo...and also have spouses that do whatever they tell them to...and are on spouse #2-6.

Make like a duck and let the water roll off.

(((HUGS))) to everyone. Thank you. It was so nice to see I'm not an enabler who just doesn't know how to train a puppy to respect me and the house, lol. Fact: These relatives feed their dog Ol' Roy. Need I say more about how highly qualified they are? I just don't believe in throwing a fit for housetraining accidents because it isn't his fault, and if it's ANYONES fault, it would be mine. I will make sure I put my own face near the accident and yell at myself, Confused Wink

Truth is I love 'em and they really do love dogs, they're just... old school.

Beejou, your always so positive and willing to listen to the negative comments. You actually listen to both sides and then make your decision. Unlike me who flies off the handle at every little thing. Big Smile

Your a great mom to Royce and T-Bone and they're lucky to have you.

Aww, thank you Tiffy :) I just figure even if I don't like what is being said, someone is taking the time to share with me because they're passionate and everyone knows /something/. That and I don't want people to feel unappreciated or unwelcomed by me, I would be hurt if someone just told me to shut it, LoL!

BTW, Tootsie is lucky to have you too :) Your devotion to her is lovely to see.
