    Help with Submissive urination

When we have to crate our 4 month female Beagle if we go away for a couple hours or more  every time we return and let her out of the crate she will squat and pee on her way out to the door.  She was crate trained from the time we got her at 9 weeks old and has done this from the start. She is otherwise completely house broken and lets us know when she wants to go out and come back in.  She is not in the crate when we are at home for the most part except when we are making or eating food.  We put her in the crate until we are through with the meal.

Everything is fine when we let her out then the only problem is when we come home after she has been alone.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. J T Derr.

So, you are certain that the dog isn't hitting the limits of its bladder control? It could be the excitement of your return; have you tried opening the door without fanfare and walking away without saying a word?

this doesn't sound like submissive urination to me....sounds like the poor girl just HAS to go and can't hold it all the way to door.

Hi and thanks for your reply. Yes we do try to open the door and say nothing.  And I'm sure it is not that she can't hold it because when we are home with her she will not have to go for much longer periods than we leave her alone.  She sleeps in the bedroom with us for no less than 7 to 9 hours and dosen't have any problem in the morning.  Now she did the same thing when we were putting her in her crate at night before we knew she could be trusted to be in the bedroom with nus at night.

Many puppies grow out of this if you don't make a big deal of it.  You are doing the right thing by not talking to her as you let her out of her crate.  You may also want to try not bending directly over her to open the crate door.  Rather, kneel with your body turned to the side, and make no eye contact.  If it continues to be a problem, you might want to put a rubber backed mat under the entrance to her crate so that you won't have to be concerned about it as much - that helps you relax even more, which may help her to feel less as though she has to appease you.  Here's a good page with lots of links on this subject: http://www.wonderpuppy.net/canwehelp/1htsubm.php.

FYI, if she is already spayed, it's possible that she is spay incontinent, meaning that once her bladder is full, and she has been resting/sleeping, the sphincter may not be strong enough to keep from spilling a bit of urine as she gets up and begins moving.  There are medications for that, so if you see this only when she has been sleeping, speak to your vet.

Tootsie, my 6 year old always has to go when exiting the car and if left alone (which is almost never).
