I found this while searching for a good "how to" aritcle.   http://www.ncraoa.com/articles/canine/CrateTrainingShannon-Chaillet.pdf

Look on page 104 of Culture Clash for good "how to" instructions on crate training. :)  It's not meant strictly for puppies, but is a good, proven method.  The problem that usually arises with new puppies is that they need to be in the crate the very first night, IMO.  That doesn't give much time to gradually acclimate them to the crate.  I do all the steps, as recommended, that first day, as many times as possible.  But when it's time for bed, I crate the puppy after making sure they've eliminated and if they immediately start crying, whimpering, barking, screaming and sound as though they are being tortured, I ignore.  Yes, it's tough and it's probably the reason many people give up completely.  They can't bear it and feel they are being horribly cruel.  As I said in your other thread, I keep the crate near my bed so I can hear the puppy and let out if I believe he needs to potty.  It also is very comforting for the puppy to be with his people.  The children will probably NOT keep the puppy in the crate if he cries. Sometimes I can barely stand it and I'm pretty hardened to puppy crying to get out of the crate. lol  But I never give in and I've never owned or trained a dog that didn't love their crate. :)

A tired puppy and most are tired at the end of the first day in their new home, is much more likely to settle down. :)
