Has anyone tried the Newtrix halter? (Kim_M)

So I bought the newish Newtrix head halter, and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried it out?

So far, I have to say, I'm not a fan. I really like the idea of having the halter attach behind the head, rather than under the chin, however.....

    - It is not that user-friendly. There are no simple snaps/buckles. You have to fold/turn it a certain way so that it slips over the nose and then a piece comes behind the head/ears to control pulling. It took some time for me to learn even how to get it on the dog's head. LOL. Coming from an experienced dog person, I can see trouble getting a newbie to use it!
    - There is a lot of extra *stuff* hanging off from the leash attachment. It might work well while walking, but It is not convenient if you take off the leash and put your dog in a kennel for transport, or let the leash go slack, as there is this bulk just hanging about.
    - Gaci pulled out of it the first few times I fitted her for it. Turns out it was not quite fitted right (my bad), however because of the design I had to loosen it every time I wanted to remove it and tighten it once it was on, which is really inconvenient.
    - Super expensive. It was $50 for me to buy. I can buy two-three Halti's for that price. The cost doesn't seem worth the hassle that it has presented so far.

I really like the idea behind it, and how it is supposed to work, and it looks like while walking it does work to prevent pulling, but there are a lot more downfalls that are causing me to become turned off from it, especially when there are other head halters out there that are more convenient, easier to use, are effective, and are much cheaper.  Am curious to see if anyone else has tried it.

I have not seen it, but thank you for the review of it. I'm currently interested in harnesses but balking at the cost. I have an escapist-of-any-collar Sheltie and also the Bloodhound. The Sheltie wont need pulling-restraint features but I'm going to need some help if I switch the Bloodhound off her choke-chain to a harness. The Sheltie is just annoying with his escaping trick, the Bloodhound will likely be a puller and is scared easily by noises so I'll be needing help with that if I switch to a harness. I do like the Gentle Leader, I don't like that one of my Goldens is wonderful on it and the other throws tantrums on the ground with it. ha! goofy dogs.

All the reviews I've heard of it from people who got it were similar to yours. I've seen one in use and personally I don't really care for them at all, I don't like the design.

The Sheltie is just annoying with his escaping trick,

Get a Ruffwear webmaster harness. It's well worth the money, and it's the perfect harness for escape artists. The design makes it very dificult for the dog to get out of, I've never heard of a dog escaping out of a Ruffwear webmaster harness.

I'm guessing you've tried it, but I have to ask, have you tried martingale collars? My Dachshund got out of everything I tried BUT a martingale, including a choke chain.

Have you seen the "Canny Collar"? It is super easy to use and it leashes in the back on the head instead of the chin. I've used one for my pointer for years now and it's the only thing that works for her prey-obsessed pulling. I just bought one for my daughter's Golden (I think you were part of the thread, yes?) and it works like a charm. Yes, he had a tantrum or two getting use to it, but he is not jumping up and grabbing any more. No more bruised hands on a walk. cannyco.com or cannyco.us (the US site) The only down side is that, if you are not vigilant, the dog can brush the nose band off. I tried the gentle header head halter on my pointer and I was worried about hurting her when she sprung out at a rabbit. She also fought it much more than the Canny Collar because of the leash attachement under the chin. the Canny Collar is much more comfortable for her anyway. I love it.

If you want a similar halter to the Newtrix but one that's easier to put on, try the K9 Bridle (made in England).  Ahimsa Dog Training has it for sale on their web site: http://ahimsadogtraining.com/store/proddetail.php?prod=MCH-0096.  I like it because if the dog manages somehow to get the noseband off, you still have the dog clipped to its regular collar, so no loose dog!
