    Clicker magic-Anyone else experiance this?

I work at a pet store and we sell clickers at the register. People will come up there with thier dog grabbed a clicker and say "oh look son its a dog training clicker, now pup will sit on command!" Then shove the clicker 5 inches from the dogs face yell sit and click it. Of course the dog jumps back startled and then the person will say "these things dont work! Ive even tryed different ones", or they say thier dog is too stupid to get it.Huh?

Its amazing how many people think dogs are programmed to do whatever you say after they hear a click, like its instinct or something.

Does this happen to anyone else? I always try to explain how the clicker is a tool to help training and you have to show the dog it means they did well and they get atreat, toy or praise. Most the time it doesnt seem to sink in tho.

YES!  Lol, I see that stuff all the time, both a complete misunderstanding of clicker training and/or the assumption that training is a finite process.  So many people make comments about how my dog is "trained" as if there is one point there the dog is not trained and another where he is.  I mean, he is already trained to a high level of obedience and sport for competition but his training is never over.  We're starting herding this fall as soon as I have the secondary obedience that is required proofed.  Training is lifelong.

Agreed Liesje,  My dogs training and my learning of dog training will never end.

Oh I get the winners too that click a million times and then look at me and ask "did he do what he was supposed to??"  Well if you wanted him to look  at you like your insane then yes you got the right response!

ETA- Good luck on your herding. I admire  people who work thier dogs and use thier instinct! I bet your boy will enjoy it!

LOL! I'd say, "No, easy buttons are in aisle 4."

I have seen entirely too many people who do that, so much that repetitive clicking is aversive to me now. Someone came to one of my classes and showed us a video of training she did with a human. She did the repetitive clicking when he was getting something. One click per correct behavior, not 17. If he figured out the final behavior, you don't click a ton of times, you give a ton of treats, or praise, or whatever you're giving.

I've never had good luck with clicker training.  Piper wont read the instructions.

Oh dear, I had another one yesterday. Woman bought two clickers to train her dog from barking. I asked do you know how to use them? she says "oh yea, im going to click them everytime he barks so it startles him! Ive seen it done before, clicker training works wonders I heard!"

I suppose you could use them that way, but its not what they are intended for and there are other ways to work her dog threw its barking. Guess it would be the equivelent of pennies in a can but then if she ever wanted to use them correctly she wouldnt be able too because they would be associated with negativity.

I just let her buy them and go on her way. Usually people wont hear me out when I go to explain, If they seem receptive to guidance Ill give it a shot tho, What would you have done??

I might have asked her if she planned to have it surgically attached? Since in order for it to work that way, she'd have to click it immediately EVERY SINGLE TIME he barked...I don't know about you, but once in a while I put my clicker down...

Then perhaps I would have pointed her in the direction of some clicker training books and told her that, Yes, in fact a clicker can be used to train away barking, but not the way she thinks. And if she's willing to put in a little time and effort, the clicker can be used to train a ton of other great things. At the very least, I would have told her that the clicker is supposed to mean good things, not scare the dog. And maybe sent her by way of Youtube to check out some Clicker Training videos, just to give her an idea of what to research if she's interested.

Good ideas, I guess I just get frustrated because 8 out of 10 people dont care at all or think I have no clue what im talking about. Thanks for the reply.

Do you have the clickers up by the till? I think you posted that, but I'm too lazy to go look. I might have just assumed, because that's where most pet supply stores keep them. Anyway, you might want to print up a short pamphlet to hand out with them with some very basic steps on how to use a clicker, some tricks(both easy and more advanced) that can be trained with the use of a clicker and a list of resources for clicker training, books, websites etc. Nothing fancy, just a plain slip of paper, easy to read, straight to the point and FREE with a clicker.

PERFECT! I should have done that  a long time ago. Do you know of any short and simple sites I can print from?? Im almost hundred percent my manager wouldnt have a problem with me putting information at the register, If anything it should help sell the clickers. I just need something thats very easy to follow because if its long people wont give it the time of day.

Or even small pieces of paper that have links to google with the search "101 things to do with a box" or "clicker training" or "loading a clicker", etc.
