Marking on walks, do you allow it?

OK Stephanie that cracked me up - clearly the mastiff doesn't realize that he is a dog and not human Wink FWIW I had to pee on a long hike with B and did He just sniffed it and moved on.
This dog *waited* until my brother was done then marked exactly where my brother...marked, lol. I mean, I don't buy into the whole dominance stuff, but this was weird. This Mastiff is so pushy and bossy and vocal (demanding LOUD barks when he wants something)...makes you wonder!

Bevo will wait to "over pee" my DH.  He stands next to DH, watching & waiting.  As soon as DH moves, Bev's over pee-ing him.  If I am forced to pee in the woods, Bev looks & moves on without over pee-ing.  I would love to say that it's just a coincidence, but it's happened too many times for me to believe that that is the case.

Nikon is the only dog that marks.  I allow it once or twice, but never on something other than a bush or tree.  I only allow my dogs on the sidewalk unless it's clear they really HAVE to go, then I allow them to go in the grass between the sidewalk and street.  I don't allow them to zig zag or roam up into peoples' yards.  Kenya is the only one that kicks after pooping but she never poops on a walk.

Willow marks-just bushes and things like and she also huffs while kicking.  And, sometimes she will just do a little tap dance with no kicking.  Or, sometimes I get a huff, kick, tap dance, zoom combo.  It all depends on just how bad she thinks she is that day, LOL.

I only stop either of the two if I'm about to get dirt and/or snow all over me or it is in an inappropriate place.

Sandy marks, infact I think she's worse then most males I know. Lol. On leash walks, I let her mark about three times. I know which bush or tree she marks all the time but after that, it's not allowed.  Off leash, I don't care as long as it's not in someone's yard or stuff.

Maze kick backs. It doesn't bother me, so I let her do it. She never does it on leash, only off and in the back yard. Lol.

Our general rule is 3 pees and you're out. They get 3 chances to pee or mark where we will stop the walk to allow it, and after that they had better keep moving while they mark because we're not stopping. Jack marks trees and "overpees" a lot. Sally really likes to mark poop for some reason..... What's really funny is that Jack didn't ever life his leg until long after he was neutered. he was altered at a year and didn't start actually lifting his leg until he was 2.....

I think of over-peeing as more of a leaving a calling card in the same place, rather than dominance.  If you pee there, then it must be a good spot, so your dog will pee there too.    Dogs will pee on things that have been previously peed on so they can leave their scent as well.  Not necessarily as a pissing match of who's the top dog, but just because "hey, I was here too!" kind of thing.  At least that's how I look at it.

I let my dogs mark whatever to a certain extent. No personal effects but other items are fine.  My dogs will mark and kick-back after pooping depending on their moods.  :)

I was hunting with Rags and Bear, and came across another hunter.  We were chatting, when Bear came up and marked the other hunters pant leg.  I was of course upset with Bear.  It was not only inappropriate, but had high volume .  The guy told me to not worry, his dogs did it all the time.  Which may have explained Bears behavior.

Seriously, I'd **NEVER** allow my dogs to make me- ever.

All the stopping for marking drives me crazy too. My black poodle (Shilly) is the marker, she ALWAYS wees on top of my other dogs wee and she kicks back after poos as well.

I get the wee dominance thing, but why do dogs do the kick back thing?

Walks for my dogs are a reward for doing something. If they want to mark, well go for it. My odlest girl marks everything too. The kick back thing is probably a way of spreading their scent.

I am a little leary about accepting marking as a dominance thing. It may meerly be  a way of leaving a message. Who knows?

If i want my dogs to walk and not scent , then i ask them to heel. In general as both have good recalls, walks are off lead.

I think it is so easy to get into a lfestyle with dogs where they get carted around the block in the obligatory walk of the day.  I try to spend quality time with each of them doing more involving things. It is more enjoyable for both of us. I make a habit of going to different places doing different things all the time. So marking is really not a problem.

I tend to agree with that, and it's a lot better to have a dog that marks *outdoors* than in... Big Smile
