Why Are There More Female Than Male Pet Dog Trainers in America?

    Hi all,

In "Why Dogs Pull on the Leash, Pt. II: Gender Roles & Sexual Chemistry" (my most recent article for PsychologyToday.com), I examine and try to provide an answer the following questions:

What do the BP oil disaster, the root-seeking behaviors of plants, the collective movements of slime molds, the reason dogs pull on the leash, and the fact that there are far more female than male pet dog trainers in America have in common? It all comes down to sexual chemistry.

    Thanks!

I think it's just because women are smarter and see to this details more completely and accurately than a lot of men do.

It's because women have all that practice training their boyfriends and husbands into being a good obedient pets.

I actually think it's because training involves multi-tasking, and women tend to be better at work that requires multi-tasking.  Men are better at singular tasks such as hunting wild boar.  Same reason why, when women go to Walmart, they remember the six other things that they could get while there, but a man will go in and get the nine volt battery he came for and go right out again;-)  BTW, in case anyone thinks that I am performing a traditionally female role, having trained both horses and dogs, I used to be the equivalent of Lisa on Ice Road Truckers:-))) So much for theories...

    Haha, this made me laugh.

I agree and add that it also involves the nurturing, tuff love and perseverance that women have had to bring to the table for thousands of years.

There may be more women dog trainers in America but that doesn't make women BETTER dog trainers than their male counterparts.

In training dogs for advanced dog sports, I find there as just as many men as women and they can be equally good or bad.  The pay scale has a lot to do with the disparity in numbers between men and women in dog training.

Just want to share.  Point of information, I find this new cognitive research absolutely fascinating;  it really isnt multi-tasking.  The current neuroscience research has indicated it is actually shifting attention at incredibly high rates with minimal need for refocusing between shifts.  There is a small group of folks who are "super taskers"  (cant remember the percentage reported  either 10 or 20).  Now it is possible that this will change as the current environment of electronics etc it actually resulting in brain changes (of an evolutionary approach).  Truly incredible when you consider what the human brain is capable of doing.... if we could just harness it more directly.

BUT, there tend to be more male horse trainers (at least of those at the top of their discipline) than female.  Hmmmmmm......

Just admit that I am right. Women are smarter than men.
