Anyone do weight pull (video)

    Anyone do weight pull (video)

Does anyone here do any weight pulling with their dog(s)?

It's gaining in popularity amongst the Alaskan Klee Kai folks, so I thought I'd give it a go with Kaiser.  There is a big UKC event coming up July 11 & 12 that is offering weight pull (along with conformation, obedience & rally) and that will be Kaiser's first pulling event.  I got his harness about a month ago and training has been going well.  At first he freaked out at the harness hitting his back legs, so he's come a long way!

Here's a video of our training session last night:

I've been thinking about doing with with Bruder, just for the sheer exercise.  Your video was fun to watch.  Where did you get your harness?

I gave the web link in the beginning of the video --- www.harnessesbycarol.com -- Almost every weight pull person I talk to has gotten a harness (or several) from her.  They are very high quality and the turnaround time on mine was about five weeks, I believe.

She has lots of different options and custom details, and I'm amazed at how well the harness fits based just on the measurements that I sent.

Kaiser was pretty phobic about stuff dragging behind him at first.  I'm still not sure how much he really "likes" pulling, but we'll see how the first event goes.

I've wondered if Luke would enjoy it -- if Kaiser sticks with it, maybe I'll get Luke a harness, too.  They cost quite a bit more for the big dogs, though!

I look at "harnesses by carol" while looking for one for Chuck, i didnt like hers so i found this other webpage : http://www.theworkingcanine.com/wpsamples.html

These harnesses are very good quality and they just look espectacular, i asked for the "blue flames" with the extra padding in the shoulders and armpits

It seems by these pictures of Chuck that the bar in the back isn't quite as close to the legs.  Is that right?  Seems less bothersome.  Also, I didn't see any prices on the link you provided (thanks btw).  Are the prices comparable to Carol's or more/less?

FWIW, the tug straps always seem to be longer on the big dogs than they are on the little dogs.  You can order them however long you want -- one of my measurements was from the chest, under the elbow to the outside of the rear leg.  One would suppose you could make this measurement as long as you like.

With weight attached to it, as Chuck has in the photo above, Kaiser's bar doesn't come anywhere near his legs.  It is plenty long, it just hangs slack with nothing attached to it.

I bought mine with almost all the "whistles and bells" and costed me around $100. Here are the prices:

Carol charges $73 for a base price one (for a dog like Chuck) and not to many options. With the one i ordered the basic one is $60 with tons of different choices. Carol is more convenient if you have a small dog but her harnesses are more basic. The "working canine" has very cool designs.

When he does not have the weight on the bar touches his heels

Cute video! We tried weight pulling at a sports camp, but it was a heavy metal thing on dirt and made a scary noise Indifferent Your setup on grass was great. How will it be in competition?

Espencer, have you tried any carts?

No carts yet, i putting the pulling exercises on hold during the summer so Chuck does not get hot as much

Cool I want to get one from that link when Nikon is fully grown (no point in getting it now since he can't do this type of training yet).

So neat, looks like a lot of fun.  Don't think Kirby would be much for this sport though.  He doesn't even like having to drag his leash behind him. XD

Weight pulling is an awesome sport. I doubt Bailey will ever be a champion puller but we still do it for exercise and fun. Bailey hardly ever pulls real heavy loads, we do a small drag weight most of the time. I like doing the small drag weight more often because doesnt tire himself out after one down and back pull. And with the small drag weight, he does his 2 laps around the field he acts like hes so proud of himself after. It builds his confidence alot so when we try for some heavier stuff he doesnt give up easily. I dont like harnesses by carol that much. Kaiser's looks really good but ive heard not so good things about them. Baileys harness is from CDpits. Ive had it for years and it doesnt look worn out one bit (well, besides all the dog hair on it lol). Heres the site if anyones interested (bailey is in the gallery Big Smile ) www.itsmysite.com/cdpits . Ive heard good things about http://www.theworkingcanine.com/ and http://www.weightpullharness.com/ but i havent bought anything from either of them yet. I might be getting a Walking/working harness for biking from Missy's BDD harnesses, or form CDpits, as soon as i get enough money.

Heres a couple pics of Bailey working in his Weight pull harness.

What State are you in? I am the Secretary of Interior Freight Dog Association out of Fairbanks, Alaska. Yes I do agree weight pulling is awesome!! Our association pulls all year - with the sled in the winter and the wheeled cart during the other months. Check out our website at www.interiorfreightdog.com

If you have any questions let me know. We would be happy to help you out. Weight pulling is a great sport for both dog and handler.

    Happy pulling :)

I'd like to get involved in weight pull with the Continental Kennel Club, which is Mugen's registration. I bought him a harness a few years ago to get started but school got in the way. I got it from Ikon Outfitters: http://www.ikonoutfitters.com/ and I was wondering if it looked like it fit him correctly? Also does anyone have any advice on how to make wearing the harness fun. Mugen doesn't enjoy it in the least right now.

TeighlorD- from those pics, to me that harness looks way to small for that dog. It looks like it would restrict his movement while pulling alot. I posted pics of my dog bailey pulling in his weight pull harness in this thread already, and you can see how the harness isnt so tightly fit on him like you dog's harness is.

As for the dog liking the harness, you obviously went a step to far to fast. You need to start from the begining again, like your dog has never seen a harness before in his life. Make everything and anything to do with the harness fun. Have him eat treats off the harness. Put his harness on when you give him dinner, put the harness on when your going for a walk, anything you can do to make the harness fun. And dont just do this for one day, even if the dog suddenly starts liking the harness, do NOT put any weight on the harness until youve done this for at least 1-2 weeks, and the dog knows that wearing a HARNESS means FUN.

This is, IMO, by far the best How-to for the beginer in weight pulling.
