Highest Quality Kibble?

    Highest Quality Kibble?

Hi.  My wife and I are considering switching to a new pet food for our dog.  We had been using Timberwolf Organics brand food for a long time on the recommendation of a friend and we liked it for a while but we are less enthused about it recently.  So I was hoping to find out here, from you good folks, what is considered to be the BEST kibble money can buy for a dog?  Please let me know your opinions, okay?  Thanks!

well - it's all a matter of opinion, honestly. Different foods work better for different dogs.

I feed my dog(s) Blue Buffalo - and he does very well on it. I've also fed Orijen to a foster and was very pleased with the results.

I would stay away from anything with byproducts - and absolutely nothing you could buy in Walmart or the grocery store...

Yep, there are as many answers as there are people.

I too use Blue Buffalo and my SIX german shepherds do wonderfully at it.  You can usually save a few bucks by buying it at Tractor Supply over Petsmart.

My requirement is NO corn, no wheat, no soy, no byproduct, and meat and meat meal as the number one and two ingredents.

It's all opinion but i have/would feed Taste of the wild, Acana, Fromm, orijen, solid gold, and nature's variety, and Evo. I also like the new canidae grain free

My dogs did well on EVO, Nature's Variety, & Fromm.

The best kibble is the one your dog does best on, and that suits your needs too (price, availability, etc). Don't forget there are other ways to feed your dog too, though. Kibble is convenient and can be inexpensive, but compared to other diet types that's about the only advantage it has. Canned food is far healthier for your dog (good quality). Even healthier are whole and fresh foods - from prepackaged diets, dehydrated diets, to home-planned fresh diets.

I encourage you to look around this section and read about some of the experiences members here have had with different foods and diet options. There's tons of information available!

Orijen is the best dog food you can buy.....if your dog does good on it.

My dogs did great on it; and still opt to feed it in the summer while traveling, etc.

Now though, my dogs are fed raw, with store bought sources as well as Primal and Stella and Chewie's raw based patties.

There is also products by Natura.  Innova has many different formulas including Evo, and they also make California Natural which is a limited protein/grain food (3 different flavors).  My dogs do great on Cal. Nat.

I also throw in a 'topper' which is a spoonful of minced up meat (rotate beef, chicken, turkey, fish, pork) and veggies with their morning kibble and a spoonful of yogurt in their evening kibbles.

The kibbles I like are Natural Balance, Nature's Variety and Orijen.   I like the ingredients and the one dog that I have who eats kibble does really well on them.

I feed my Danes Eagle Pack, mainly holistic but unlike Glenda I DO like corn once in a while, so I also buy the Natural Formula that does have corn. I rotate each meal.  I also feed him BilJac frozen for breakfast with an egg and yogurt.

But all in all....I am thinking that there is no kibble thats really great. Not so much because of what its made of...but rather how its made. Seriously.  Does it look like food?   Nope,,,not to me.  Which is why I do BilJac frozen for one meal.  I add a lot of homecooked to his supper...and am kind of cutting back more and more on the kibble as I add more and more of real food.   I haven't switched yet because he is a growing puppy and I honestly can't keep up with how much he eats...and I am afraid of not getting the correct nutrients Dane puppies need.

I am going to second what others have said, that the best kibble is the one that your dog does the best on.

Also, it might help to know what about TWO don't you like and what formula are you using? Is your dog's coat dry, are they licking their feet, not eating the food, etc?

If we know a little bit more, we could probably help narrow down some good options to try for your dog.

I've had good luck with Orijen, Nature's Variety, Eagle Pack,  and Blue Buffalo. If I could get my hands on Acana, without having to internet order it, I would try that in a heart beat! We rotate every bag. My Aussie eats raw two out of every three meals, because that is what she does the best on. My pointer mix could eat rocks and stay beautiful.

All my dogs get eggs about once every two days, we add fish or coconut oil, probiotics and joint supplement. My Aussie also gets kelp.

The supplementing is not something everyone does or feels that dogs need, so I wouldn't consider that a "must" to improve diet, but hopefully will help give you a picture of what others feed.

Wow, my dog IS licking her feet lately but I never wondered if that had something to do with her food.  What does it mean?

I've fed EP Holistic sardine, which she did great on, but now I feed Orijen 6 Fish and she does extremely well on it too. I also supplement daily with salmon oil and vitamin E. Salmon oil is the greatest IMO.

I remember reading years ago that licking their feet is one  sign of a food allergy.

I believe its yeast problems, if I remember correctly.

I'm sure there will be others here to answer.

It would be a lot easier if there was one "best" food, but unfortunately there isn't. Foods I like are Fromm 4 Star, Canine Caviar, Before Grain, Orijen, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack Holistic and California Natural.
