Puppy food recommended by breeder

What WE consider to be sizes doesn't really matter when it comes to food.  Shoot I live with 6 german shepherds.  To ME a 50 lb dog is little!

When looking at dog foods, we have to balance what WE think against what the pet food industry defines as "large" in order to maximize their nutrition.

I feed my two larger dogs, my Aussie and my blue heeler Nitro Maintenance. For years I was feeding PMI Prime, but after we moved, I wasn't able to get the PMI locally so I switched to the most comparable.  It's not cheap, but it appears to do the job.  My dogs have beautiful coats and plenty of energy. They never had any digestive problems or anything.  As for my 3 mth old Yorkie, I started out with Iams puppy as that was what he was being fed.  My vet gave me a 'puppy pack' which contained a bag of Hill's Science Diet.  Of course, when I started mixing that in, he picked out all the Hills and ate those.  So, I guess I'll stick with the Hills, which was recommended by the vet, and he likes.  ironically, I bought Tater, the yorkie 'special' cookies and you know what he prefers?  Milk bones that I give the bigger dogs.  Go figure.

I used the Purina PMI for years.  I think it's now called Red Flannel (or something like that).  You can get it at a feed store that sells purina products.  I've switched from that brand because I moved, and the nearest purina dealer was 53 miles away.  So, I  now feed Nitro Maintenance to my stock dogs.  I never had any problem with the PMI and wouldn't have switched if I could get it easier.  I use Purina products for my cattle as well.  Some of it's more expensive but to me it's worth it.

What is Nitro?  Don't believe I've ever heard of that one.

I'm sorry, but I wouldn't feed any of the Purina line if they gave it to me for free.  The coats, the skin, the general health, the lack of needing to use frontline.....healthy bodies and immune systems.  I'll stick with the better quality foods that don't use grains as protein sources.

I think they might mean Nutro, but I could be wrong. I definitely wouldn't feed any of those PMI foods, not only if I was given it free, but even if I was paid. I have always seen improvements when switching from foods like Dog Chow and Eukanuba to a higher quality food.

Agreed, but I might take the food and donate it to the shelters.  I did that with the years supply of Nutro i won.

    Who is that little cutie?

I would donate the food to a shelter too- some food is better than no food! The puppy in my sig is Peanut, a longhaired Chihuahua puppy. He's almost 5 months old and we got him when he was 11 weeks old. I never thought that I would have gotten a Chihuahua, but I love their personalities!

Oh, I do too, but, I'd be afraid I'd break one of those!  He's a doll!

Thank you! He is one of the sweetest puppies. I do worry about stepping on him, but I've been careful for so long that now I'm careful without even thinking about it. My poor husband is always hearing- don't step on the puppy! lol I guess I watch Peanut like a hawk and when he's near Jon's feet I get nervous.

I would be a complete and total wreck with a PUPPY that small!  I'm too much of a klutz to be trusted around anything tiny and breakable!  Yet, I can deal with new borns of any breed, so maybe I wouldn't break him.......
