Spending limit on dog food.

    Spending limit on dog food.

What is your spending limit on dog food?

I was checking some sites that sell dog food and gosh some of the dog food is ridiculesly priced IMO. The petstore that I buy dog food from only sells Wellness,TOTW,some Eagle Pack, Nature's Recipe, and then all the low quality dog food. I really want to try other good quality dog food but dont want to pay 50 bucks for a 13lb bag. At least give me a 20lb bag for 50 bucks. Some of the foods I wanted to try are like 60-70 bucks.

So where do you guys draw the line at?

If Lillie and Joker where your dogs what would you feed them? Lillie has trouble keeping weight on but Joker is doing good so far. Dont forget Joker is to be shown also.

$40 for 20lbs or less. That is until I move out, and Sam comes with me(#1 requirement for me), I have my own job....then I'd take it up to $50.

I have no idea what I'd put either one on.

I hear ya !   I just bought a months worth of dog food for Prancer.   Thankfully she only weighs 13 lbs.    12 cans of food plus a 4 lb bag of Wellness Core - $36.    She also gets 1/3rd fresh foods - I'm thinking that adds about $30 to the food bill per month.   For $66 I'd bet I could do 100% homecooked.      When I get a chance I'm going to do the homecooked calculation.   I'd have to think its less - and healthier !!

I have definite limits.spending $50 for 20-30lbs of dog food that will last way less than a month here for my 5...is not something I can do.

My food fits into the budget and the dogs are all doing well on it so for now until the change formulas like "everyone" seems to be doing, lol, we're staying put. $28-30 for 40lbs, and a 24 pack of wet food topper for Cleo at about $30. We can go about a month and a half on that.

Ok - I can tell I'm DEFINITELY overspending !!!!  time for me to seriously rethink the dog food budget.     I'm at the point where I'm having eggs for dinner one time a week and cereal for dinner a second day a week to save money ... its time for Prancer to chip into the pot also.

I freely admit that I rely heavily on potatoes and oatmeal and rice for the bulk of these guys' calories.  But their diets are similar in DM adjusted protein and fat levels to the best premuims so I don't feel too badly.

Sadly, now that Ben is gone, my dog food budget has gone down by about a third.  When we move to the new farm, I'll be adding in the guard dogs to the homemade regime - it just makes good sense as the price of dog food goes sky high.  I'll be working with Mordanna to do a "kennel" diet for them to maximize the least expensive ingredients and still provide optimum nutrition.

I spent $54 for a big bag of Evo (28 lbs or something) - so I guess that's my limit. I don't like spending that much but the dogs do well on it so there it is....

Seems I've moved the goalposts several times but we do have limited choice due to his allergies and nutritional needs - currently we are using Orjen Fish 29 or 30 lb bag is nearly $70 with tax included.

But we have been able to feed less and it is still cheaper than going all home prep for him.

I think I would gag a little if a 25-30lb bag of food came in over $60.  So long as it stays under that, I'll deal.  Kaiser & Luke are on the same food now that Kaiser moved away from puppy food, but Kaiser doesn't really make that much of a dent in how fast a bag gets eaten.

I've always been horrible at looking at price tags, though.  I don't tend to take note of the cost of ANYTHING until we get to the register...

I tend to buy a large bag of food (30 lbs or more) that should last about two to two and a half months.  My maximum limit for a 30 to 40 lb bag is $40 to $45.  I get manufacturer's coupons (for example, a $5 coupon off for Healthwise, for Cal Nat, and etc.) a lot so, I usually can get good prices for the holistic dry food at a feed store.  Since he can't handle potatoes, no grain free food for him.  Actually, my lab does better on food like Healthwise.

Now, I also spend an average of $50 to $60 every two months for other stuff..... like 95% canned meat (wellness, innova evo, etc.), chicken wings/necks, organ meat, marrow bones (which I can get at $0.59/lb!!), sardines, bully sticks, omega 3, vitamin e, and probiotics.   Again, buying in bulk help reduce the costs in the long run.  I also feed my lab some home cooked food....whatever we have for dinner that we can share with him without stuff like onions...

So, I average about $100 to $110 every two months.

I just bought a 30 lb bag of Orijen 6 Fish and two bags of missing link (my dogs coats are awesome on this even though the ingredient list wouldn't lead you to believe it has any value). The total was $100 and some change. That will last about 3 weeks, maybe a month now that the foster is gone.

We've had to plan more for the dog food and supplement purchases now that the prices have all skyrocketed. (OT -- I thought the increase was related to gas prices, now that the prices have come down a little, why is the dog food price still sky high?)

I'd put my money more on changing suppliers to make sure they're "clean" and instituting more quality control to appease the customer who's understandably worried after the recall nonsense. Even if the foods you feed weren't directly affected, they need to make some extra effort to ensure they aren't the one's caught next time...

Also the cost of corn affects chicken...and other animal feeds...that's still high to my knowledge...so....

Those costs would be ongoing. Just my theory tho.

    Good point Gina.

I really liked Missing Link for my dogs too. A lot of people don't like the ingredients but my dogs really did great on it. Especially Dakota who needed it the most.

The price of a loaf of bread is outrageous these days, so the foods that use corn or wheat are going to be higher, and the animals used often EAT those things, so of course the price of meat is higher and we the consumer get to pay the freight.

And, I do believe that the better companies ARE going to stricter QC measures, and that costs money.
