Running next to a bike

Well I use the prong for walks as well so it's not just for the bike.  I don't use a choke on Maze. I'm going in to the petstore to see if they can get a Ruffwear harness since I don't have a credit card I can't order it off of a lot of sites.

My only concern is if he decides to switch direction and jerk the leash, your hands will move with the handlebar and turn the bike to where he's pulling and cause you to lose control. At least on the seatpost it'll be more centered and you have both hands on the handle bar. If he walks poorly and lunges at squirrels, he needs to be conditioned before you ride with him for your safety. This is what I used while conitioning him http://www.amazon.com/WalkyDog-USA/dp/B0002MQJJW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1222132994&sr=8-1. A few of the other systems makes you jack the seat up.

I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're riding at slow speeds. I would recommend using the collar because most dogs has the instinct to pull harder when they feel tension so it may be more difficult on the harness.

Maze is a wee bit weird. She doesn't pull on the harness unless she's got a long line on and we're tracking. But she pulls like a devil on a regular collar.  I'll try with her regular collar until I can find a harness that I like.

What I did with Belle that seems to work well for her is, I have her on a harness attached to her leash. Attached to her leash is a rope, slightly longer than her leash and that is attached to a prong collar. I call it my "air brakes". IF she were to try to go after something while biking, I can easily grab the rope and put tension on the prong collar. She feels that and returns to proper bike manners. The rope attached to her prong is not tight unless I take a hold of it.

Belle is great next to the bike, however once this summer she flipped me. Once in 2+ years is pretty good in my book. However I realized I can't risk a second time so I concocted this method. She has a ton of respect for the prong and I have not needed to use it. She just knows it is on.

I use a pyramid dog leash attached to my bike. I have had several spills and since I got this I have been upright.

Well the bike I'm using right now isn't mine so I can't attach anything to it.

For the past bit, I've been teaching Maze commands just for the bike while walking so she knows them and I can transfer them over.. Here's hoping it works.

I've been wanting to try this with Sam. I like the Ruff Wear harness that was suggested, along with the WalkyDog or Springer. I'm sadly having to wait until Christmas for the entire thing, Mom's making it a present, LOL.

Emma hated the bike, too. I used a flexi and harness. I never got pulled over. I stopped, because Emma isn't really into running. She wants to stop and sniff and mark stuff. I can put her in a heel and make her just GO, but she doesn't enjoy it. Teenie loved it. She'd get out in front of me and just run. Ena B isn't old enough, yet, so she hasn't tried it. I have been thinking of taking the bike to the beach, but I worry about running over somebody else's dog, LOL.

OMG guys, please get a springer attachment for the safety of all involved.  I made my own version (training a sled/weight pull dog has a slightly different goal and requires slightly diff. equipement) but the idea is to have 1) a short leash that won't get tied up but will still give a little and not jerk the dog and 2) it's attached as low as possible to prevent the dog from pulling you over.  My mom was leash biking her dog and yeah, he's a doofus malamute and took her over and cracked her ribs.

I don't recommend attaching a harness, that allows the dog to pull---YOU need to be the one dictating speed.  Please  be careful guys, this is worrisome.
