    Alternative to Iams Low Residue?

This is a tough question. Dakota is on Iams Low Residue right now which is crazy expensive, $37 for a 15 lb bag. I can't argue that it's not working though. She actually has real poop these days. She always seems to be hungry though. I wonder if there's something else out there that I can put her on. Here's the Iams Low Residue: (the ingredients bleh!)

    Intestinal health formulas.
Iams® Veterinary Formulas Intestinal - Low-Residue™ formulas are designed to nutritionally aid in the management of gastrointestinal conditions. Your veterinarian may recommend these diets when your pet is experiencing vomiting, loose stools, gas or constipation. Ask your veterinarian about other intestinal concerns that Low-Residue™ may be recommended for.

Maybe IVD has something? Their RX diets usually have nicer ingredients lists. Is it the fiber that's helping her? Maybe the low fat and protein?

I would give Blackwood's 1000 formula a try ... they make an excellent, high quality feed - a few years back I used their 2000 formula and had outstanding results with it. Aside from that, I originally started using it for my GSD who had constant digestive problems Tongue Tied The food was a great help to her. Another food I used for that dog was Pedigree L&R, which is what brought her back from near starvation when we first got her ... OR ... Blackwood also puts out a food called Adorindack, which is a no frills diet that should be great for dogs w/ digestive issues.

what is Dakota's diagnosis? these horrible ingredients prescription diets are fine for stabilization of a condition, but long-term feeding not a good idea.

    • Gold Top Dog

No diagnosis. They don't know what the problem is. I'm doing some vet hunting right now to get another opinion. I asked if she could eat this stuff long term and they said yes. The Iams site says they can eat it long term too.

Have you ever tried something like Solid Gold Holistique Blends?

    http://solidgoldhealth.com/products/showproduct.php?id=6&code=160

Low fat, low protein, high fiber, no yucky ingredients. It can be used as a base to add other stuff to, but it says that it's fine to use alone, too.

    • Gold Top Dog

I have had her on Solid Gold in the past and she did well on it. Of course, she's done well on everything prior to this problem.

I just found a new vet in our area that I'm going to see next week who specializes in geriatric dogs and nutrition. Hopefully I'll get some good info from her!

Ditto, I have seen Pedigree lamb and rice do wonders for dogs with digestive upset and loose stools, it is a very under rated food.

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh, let me know what the geriatric vet says.  I'd be interested in hearing her suggestions.

For now, I'd keep her on the Iams since she's stable on it.

Low residue diets are in general low fiber diets with no raw fruits/veggies.  Maybe look at the fiber content of the various diets people have suggested and see which one is simmilar :)

Eagle pack makes two nice senior formulas---good protein level, moderate fat, and as ottoluv mentioned, low fiber.

    Enhanced maturity formula: http://www.eaglepack.com/Pages/SP_EnhMaturity.html

    Holistic Select Senior formula: http://www.eaglepack.com/Pages/HS_SeniorCare.html

Both are a bit higher in kcals than the Iams low residue, so she may feel a bit more satisfied, as well.

Choline Chloride (link removed by moderator) is a kind of vitamin B. Choline Chloride can promote liver and kidney fat metabolism; Choline Chloride or acetylcholine synthesis based body, thus affecting the transmission of nerve signals. Choline is also required for in vivo synthesis of motioning source of methyl. In many natural foods contain Choline Chloride, but not enough to meet the modern concentration on the animal feed industry, the need for rapid growth. Therefore, the feed synthesis of Choline Chloride should be added to meet their needs. Lack of Choline Chloride can lead to fatty liver, slow growth, reduced egg production rate, mortality increased and so on.
