im about to pull hair out over food

also, should i mix the dry food with can food? or just go dry?

also, with my boxer i mixed PLAIN yogurt or cottage cheese sometimes with his food? is this good to do with the pom?

this is the first small dog ive ever had so im worried im going to do something to hurt him as far as nutrition

SERVING SIZE is really what gets people with small dogs. What it says on the bag is extremely misleading and way too much. Many people over feed little dogs but don't even realize it. Less than 1/2 cup per day should be their main diet and it's okay do give treats as long as its less than 10% of their diet.

Personally I mix canned & dry kibble together. There really isn't right or wrong answer; it's just personal preference.

Large amounts of yogurt & cheese can be bad... honestly I wouldn't go too crazy, my own Pom sometimes throws up after adding yogurt and cheese. It all depends on the dog and how much you provide.

If you are worried about doing something to harm him then just stick to Premium Dog Food and make sure he gets plenty of exercise.

That is a 4 Star food and looks like a great place to start. In the future, if you want to move up and can find something local or get a good price on line, you might consider moving up to a 5 or 6 star. I feed a 5 star food.

So the dog is getting canned (Ol Roy) now and you're switching to kibble? I don't think I'd actually mix it together, but I would make the transition as easy to take as possible. For example, let's say his daily ration is normally 1 C of canned, and the kibble serving (according to the package) is 1 C (just to keep the numbers easy - he probably eats much less).

Day 1 & 2: give him 1/4 of a kibble serving and let him eat that, then give 3/4 serving of canned immediately.

Day 3 & 4: give him 1/2 kibble serving and let him eat that, then give 1/2 serving of canned immediately.

Day 5 & 6: give him 3/4 kibble serving and let him eat that, then give 1/4 serving of canned immediately.

Day 7: Feed him all kibble and toss the Ol Roy! LOL

You want to give the kibble first, when he's hungry, so he'll get used to eating that. Then the stinky Ol Roy will be like a dessert! LOL

Some kibbles come in large bite or small bite (kibble size). It just depends on what you and your dog likes.

Edit: Now that I read Pom's post I see I may have misunderstood about mixing canned and kibble. Oh, well... LOL I wouldn't mix them anyway. The higher quality kibbles are really pretty good.

im sorry i think i said that wrong.. he IS NOT getting canned food.. just dry kibble... i was wondering if i should give him the canned food as well..

also... i found a food that a groomer here carries.. its called natural balance??? so that is another choice

I believe I just said that... www.naturalbalance.net This is the food I feed my dog. And based on personal preference I do dry kibble mixed with canned food. You don't HAVE to or SHOULD do anything. It's up to you.

Ol Roy was one of the recall foods. You may want to check into that. I had given it to my dogs for a very short time before switching to home cooked w/some kibble and I was shocked to see it oon the recall list. Not trying to scare you, just thought you should be aware. I give my girls, who aren't poms, but small dogs as well, a tablespoon of plain - all natural yogurt every day. They do fine with it and it helps with their digestion. They are pretty regular. They also get a multi vitamin each day along with Orijen Fish Formula kibble, which is a fantastic, no carb/high protein food from Canada, but can be difficult to get in certain areas. Then they get baked salmon, steak, eggs, cheese, etc., but no chicken.......it makes them itch horribly. It was apparent almost immediately when I eliminated it from their diet. Since they won't do the fish oil, it's too strong for them, I give them a supplement (don't know the name offhand as I'm at work) that is a liquid that I mix with their yogurt.  Good luck!!

I'm excited to get my second Pom this summer! :o) I'm extremely picky so I groom her myself but I must say... after even dampening them with a spray bottle and brushing then blow drying... it does wonders! I can't wait to see pictures of him all nice and freshly gro0o0omed!

I totally agree... that is why I mix it with a little bit of canned food. I know I'd be bored eating cereal all day long :o) So I spoil my girl.

You didn't say it wrong, I read it wrong. Sorry. Stick out tongue

Natural Balance is a 4 Star food as well. I like it! Do you know what formulas they have? So it looks like you have several to choose from! Yay!  You can keep your hair!

I would not add milk products to a dog's diet who already has prove themselves to be sensitve.  Probiotics...a definite in my book to add to diet.  I only feed dry kibble.

and i went with " TASTE OF THE WILD (WETLANDS CANINE FORMULA)"

i was going out to buy the natural balance and found this as well and on a whim bought it.. i looked online and it is a 6 star food.. or at the review webpage i checked it was

please correct me if im wrong

    • Gold Top Dog

There are TWO problems I personally have with that food. (1) multiple protein sources. It has Duck, Duck Meal, Chicken Meal, and Chicken Fat. I will only feed my dog food with ONE meat/meat meal. (2) WAY too high in protein for a little Pomeranian. It's 32% Crude Protein minimum! ouch!

If you are going to feed this, don't feed a lot! 1/4 cup per day... or even less.

If you are worried about Food Allergies multiple protein sources aren't really the way to go because you have no idea if it's the Duck or the Chicken they are reacting too. (I forget if you were saying you were worried about this)

I don't want to make you feel like you "messed up" tho, so hopefully I'm not coming off like that. It look like great food... I just don't think it's great for a Pomeranian. That's just my opinion.

The breeders I know all recommend Eagle Pack Holistic, Natural Balance, and Orijen for Pomeranians

okay what if i alternated out this and the natural balance???

also on the natural balance food what is best the organic or the one in the blue bag?

    • Silver

also wont that amount the 32% help with his "energy"...  he is such a lazy dog.. he acts like he wants to run and play but he dont have the energy and the vet says there is nothing wrong with him?

just a thought .. again im new at all this thats why im asking so much.. lol
