The problem with most of the Hill's formulas are they use Ethoxyquin as a preservite.....

which is classified as a pesticide, Its main use is to preserve rubber by the Tire Industry

Lori was feeding the canned z/d, which doesn't have ethoxyquin. Also, in studies that showed toxic effects in animals given ethoxyquin, they were given 20 to 50 times more than the maximum amount allowed by the FDA.

Ethoxyquin and BHA/BHT are the only preservatives that can effectively stabilize fresh meats that are hydrolyzed or meats that are used straight from slaughter (aka fresh)  Wink   (Hence why Bil-Jac has no other option but to use it for their formulas)

It is also the most effective preservative for preventing fat from becoming rancid, which is a concern in foods that are higher in fat such as EVO or Taste of the Wild. For foods like those using natural preservatives I wouldn't open a bag that couldn't be used within a few weeks, which is what I do. (JMO)
