What a question!  There have many, many answers.  I have a puppy who is 5 1/2 months old.  He weighs about 3 lbs. 8 oz so far.  He IS picky!  I've tried Nutro puppy for the extra protein--he will hardly eat it.  I always keep a dish of it available.  I also tried some samples the vet gave me...same response.Ick!  He will eat the cats' (he is friends with 3 of them) food...probably because he sees them eating it and he doesn't want them getting something he doesn't have.  I asked the vet about this, he said since he is high energy and needs the extra protein and calories in cat food, it is okay for now.  He is  a chihuahua that is very well behaved, but picky.

What is a good tasting dry dog food for a small, picky puppy?

I like a lot of the foods, my problem is finding one the Hektor does well on. We are currently using Taste of the Wild, bison and venison and it seems to be working well. I have my fingers crossed that this is the one.

Both of my boys are on  Wellness, and have done fabulously on it. It's holistic and natural, which is really important to us. They also get Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul canned mixed in with their kibble.

Natural Balance and occasionally Blue Buffalo, plus some raw (they got chicken wings for the first time a few days ago and it took both about 10 minutes to figure out what to do with them!).

I rotate, but always the holistic types.  Innova, Canidae, Orijen, etc.  The only one I don't use is Wellness - Sioux gets the runs on it.  Maska gets California Natural mostly, because he does better on lower fiber, lower carb than the other dogs.  Fergie gets canned - Evo, Evanger's, Canidae, Tripett, etc.

So far California Natural, Innova, Timberwolf, Eagle Pack Holistic, all have been good food for her.

Right now its Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato.  I think if I do anything at all I may switch flavor but stick with the Wellness brand.  I too have tried many other foods with Harley and this one he has done the best with by far.

Flint River Ranch.  River has gastro issues he could never take to me rotating his food, FRR was the only food that actually help him.  No wet, I don't see the reason for it.

    • Bronze

    Canidae.  They love it!

    • Puppy

I have had great results from the Fromm family.  We usually feed the Salmon ala'Veg.  They also have White Fish & Potato, and a Duck & Sweet Potato that are really good but the Duck is a little more fatty and therefore gives my dogs a little more gas.  : )  To give them a change we tried Timberwolf this last week.  It's a bit more pricey but they're very excited over the change.  Anything with all natural ingredients I figure you can't really go wrong.  Ah yes, and I also buy the canned Merrick Dog food and mix a spoonful in with the food for a little extra treat.  Smile

I recently switched to Blue Biffalo and I really like it! Zoya Bean does well on it.

She is stuck on the Royal Canin Puppy.  And she is going to be a year old next month, so I need to stop feeding her puppy food, because it is more for growth, and she is getting chubby!  Has anyone else had this problem?

Sorry if this sounds like a 'pat' answer, but if you can't get her onto another diet, how about just cutting down on her intake? Don't free-feed, only give a fixed amount daily. If she's starting to gain, simply cut her back VERY gradually till her weight hits an acceptable level and stays there.  Be sure that any treats you give are counted as part of this ration: a day with more treats means a day with less dog food. Dog foods for "all life stages" recommend this (see Canidae P.A.W.S. for example).

Besides- if I gain weight, I eat less and exercise more; that works for a dog, too.

BTW, Dundee and Holly are on Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato, 'cuz Holly seems to have a problem with rice. It gives her terrible gas!  :(

I feed Salem Fromm Family Salmon ala Veg mostly. I sometimes will buy the Chicken ala Veg or Duck and Sweet Potatoe too, but he seems to like the Salmon the best.

I also give him wet food every once and awhile. Normally either Fromms or Merrick. He loves the Fromm Chicken thigh!
