Prong collars

I would never put a prong collar on an aggresive dog that lunges as it will cause them pain and solidify their fears that other dogs are scary (and cause pain too!)

My favorite book with regards to dog aggression is Click to Calm: Healing the Aggressive Dog by Emma Parsons

Fight!  by Jean Donaldson is also quite good.

Thanks, I ordered the books. I am afrade I am going to have to find a new trainer for Gizmo. I know she's learning but before I can even start her with a group I want to learn how to handle her agression. I am considering for now only doing private lessions with a trainer quilified in this area.

I don't think a prong collar in this situation is going to help this dog. I think desensitization and counterconditioning training would do best for this dog.

There is a couple of books that are great to read on is called Pet Behavior Protocols by:  Suzanna Hetts and the other one is Don't Shoot The Dog by: Karen Pryor.

If you need to use the prong to control the dog then please do so.  The first goal is everyones safety.  I would not however use the prong for training practices.  Read through the above mentioned books, and start working on your own.  Then find a qualified behaviorist (not trainer) to help you.

Yes, a behaviorist! I never considered going to a behviorist, but what should I look for when choosing one to go to? What question should I ask before so I know that is the person who I want to help me?

I am happy with the results I have using the prong collar but dogs are so complex that I often feel like maybe there is a better way then that. Gizmo know sit, sit stay, down, down stay, stand and come all of which i could have never taught her without the trainer and the use of the collar.

I have a very dog-reactive (not aggressive, but it almost looks it) border collie mix.  For a short time I used a prong on her for control, but her reactiveness wasn't getting any better so I began teaching her a focused heel and sit and slowly- very, very, very slowly - we are getting closer to dogs on walks without her going ballistic (just like mrv suggested).  She wears a martingale collar and has been making progress.  Desensitizing really does work, but you have to be very patient and it is a lot of hard work, but I am so proud of the progress Zoey has made!

Your dog can get better too- you can do it if I can!  I also think a behaviorist is a good idea- I'm sure they will be very helpful to you.  Good luck and keep us posted!

prong collars are doggy cruze controls.  they are great, they dont choke,  they pinch and the dogs dont like that so they dont pull!!!

do they hurt the dog never unless ''you'' pull.  let the dog pull into it.
he she will learn .    but you will never be at the vet with a neck throat
;problem like on a choker collar.

Prongs are safer than chokers, but are still not appropriate for this particular situation.

I think the prong collar works good on some dogs. Ollie the Great Dane used to pull a lot, but the prong would keep it to a minimum.  He would almost choke himself to death with a choker. I still have one that I put on Bubby only for a bath and take it off...I will never use a regular choker collar again on any dog...but I would use a prong collar if needed.
