Overweight?

many dogs seem to convert carbs straight into body fat. Put them on a low-carb diet, even if fed the exact same amount of calories, and the body fat melts away.

I'd suggest feeding half of what the dog food bag says, and weigh the dog weekly and adjust the food amount up or down according to the dog's body condition.

Thes seems to be true in dogs with a low to moderate energy level, but it's absolutely not true for my field trial beagles. They do better with a little extra carbs (whole ground corn) in their diet, especially during trial season.

If my dog (when fed dry) ate what was the recommended amount she would have been huge!  As it is she is still a bit thick in the waist but since we switched to homecook and evening strolls she is slimming down.

Don't just switch to a lite formula and expect a miracle.  Be sure she gets some supervised exercise each day.  It will help in many ways in the long run.  And keep an eye on all the treats too- those add up.
