    Feeding Yogurt

If I feed my dog yogurt with his kibble how much should he be getting? (He's 65 pounds). Also, what kind of yogurt should I feed? Would yogurt be equivalant to giving probiotics?

    Thanks. [:)]

Just plain yougurt with nothing addes is the best. My dog will eat it right off the spoon but you could also mix it with dog food. I gave it to georga because she had very bad food allergies and yogurt seemed to help some. A table spoon twice a day is a good amount to give.

I buy the most banal form of yogurt I can find, which is the plain non-fat yogurt.  She loves it, but I limit her to a spoonful or two a day.

Some people say vanilla,,,but I think vanilla has sugar in it,,,,I only feed plain.  I put about a BIG tablespoon on top of  Bubbys kibble each meal...

I feed whole milk yogurt from a holistic store.  Just because that's what I eat myself.  I don't care whether it's organic or not - just so it's hormone free and has that yummy cream layer on the top.  [sm=wink2.gif]

It's a quarter cup per dog for my completely homeade recipe, or just a dollop to enhance a kibble meal.  It also takes about a quarter cup twice a day to counteract the effects of an antibiotic regimine or soothe an otherwise upset tummy.

What's the issue with them having a little sugar, does it cause a problem??

You can use any flavor yogurt... just make sure it has live active cultures in it.

So the extra sugars wouldn't be bad, Amy?  That's why I always buy the plain-Jane stuff.

It depends what you want to give it for.I give my dogs 1 or 2 large tbs of yogurt daily because they like the taste of it,not so much for the probiotics it provides. For this they  get probiotic capsules, you would have to give dozens and dozens of tubs of yogurt to get the same benefit of one capsule. Plain yogurt helps for the odd bout of diarreah or whatever, but for more heavy duty therapeutic benefits you cant beat the capsules.

Either way, yogurt is a nice healthful addition which does provide small amounts of  acidophilus et al.

I guess a little sugar in yogurt isn't going to hurt anything, but since I do give her a glob of yogurt with every meal, I'm thinking I don't want her to have the sugar all the time.   I KNOW she loves the plain,,even though I would never touch it.  lol!

I don't give Bubblegum yogurt for probiotics...I give it just for something good in her food!! I do give her DogZymes in her kibble each meal, and it says in their brochure that "a single dose of DogZymes is equivalent to 80 cups (yes,,,cups) of yogurt or more."

If your dog tends to have any yeast issues, sugar isn't a good idea.  Otherwise, some sugar from a natural source isn't horrible.  For my Newf with yeast problems, she gets plain organic yogurt with the ocassional treat of vanilla frozen yogurt.  My Mini Schnauzer that has zero problems and a cast iron stomach gets a variety but mostly plain organic as well.

Right... I mean a lot of people give fruit which has a lot of natural sugar in it.  If you feed fresh fruit its no different, in fact going to have a good bit more than the yogurt.  Natural sugar is not bad... but as mentioned some dogs may have allergies or something.... but for the majority its perfectly fine.  Even veggies have a little sugar.

As long as it doesnt have any added sugar... theres no reason why you cant give them a flavored one.  The natural sugars are nothing to worry about.[:)]

I just want to add feeding too much of anything dairy is going to cause loose stools.  Its great in moderation.. but giving a whole bunch at once isint a good idea... same with milk, cottage cheese, cheese, anything dairy.
