I am curious as to what you have to say though, honestly. [;)]

I think this previous post pretty well covers  my philosphy i.e.

there is no one, especially vets who are complete experts in canine nutrition, you can read all the journals, listen to all the sales reps, attend meetings every year, listen to clients stories...listen to holistic people, listen to raw diet people etc etc etc...everyone is an authority in their own little way...The whole point that is missed here is that every dog, cat, horse elephant etc etc have certain idicynratic differences..what works for one may not work for others..

no one is the complete aurhtority on each species... I have listened to nurtion "expert" from as far away as austria..what he says  will not be applicable  to every animal.... You go with what works best for your individual pet..

    end of my discertations.

I never had a problem , with the exception of a few allergies wdith commercial dog food, I gave clients the option that if they wanted to try the "exotic foods" to go ahead, if they were satisfied with them and they got good results then stick with what ever works best..Contrary to some peoples thoughts on vets, I never ever sold dog fiood from my office...I would occasionally Rx perscriptions diets that they could pick up from other vets because  I had =no room to stock them...

I found as much problems with the "exotic diets" as I did with the commercial diets which uusually incluy=uded  not likeg the taste, getting diarrhea and soom allergic otitis..fI a cliient insisted on doing the barf diet i would suggest thet they give a good vitamin/mineral supplement along twith it, and actually with lots of other diets...If raw. food, exxotic or commercial did  not say fortified then I suggested a supplement

I know this flies in the face of a lot of holistic  advocates, but I can only speak from my experience, (50 years) and not from lable reading....Also raising 7 kids while in practice all my kids pets, cats, dogs, hampsters, chickens, pigeeons, mice and several other species, oh yea a raccoon..almost all got table left overs..they seemed to survive, as did the kids

    Thanks for sharing dvet.
I have to agree with you- it all depends on the individual dog and how they do on *any* food, whether it's plain old science diet, a holistic kibble or raw foods.
Every owner also needs to find something that works for them.

When I had human kids (a 2 yr old and one due end of Aug) my life changed, the dogs' lives changed. They were usually raw fed or homecooked for and in my mind, kibble was *bad.*
I had horrible morning sickness and could not prepare their meals as I had before.  After about 2 years of trying to find the right kibble for us, they now get petguard lifespan plus the occasional (healthy) table scraps.

All dogs and owners will have to decide for themselves about what is best for them and their dogs.

I'm happy to hear your viewpoint dvet, thanks for sharing :)

I was sick 24/7 with my first.  Mother-in-law kept telling hubby it was "all in my head", but he and I knew it wasn't----IT was in the toilet, trash can, etc.

Have any of you ever had a dog with morning sickness?  I had never heard of it until just recently when one of the goldens on one of the golden forums i belong to had puppies.  She actually had morning sickness in the beginning and in the last week.   Oh, she did have 12 puppies a week ago Tuesday.

I have to say I go along with dvet in I don't think everything  you read in books is totally correct.  Remember the book Hitler did?  That was his opinion, and the opinion of many others at that time.  It is my understand that for decades, in Japan the bombling of Pearl Harbor was left out of history books, and kids were taught that American STRUCK first.  That has been changed , but many grew up believing it.

Therefore, reading a dozen books on a subject is nothing compared to seeing "that subject" for 50 years.  I know folks who read books on child rearing (and believe me, different writers have different ideas in a lot of areas) did everything as instructed, and yet the kids are so wild, bad mannered, rude, etc that folks don't even want to be around the family. They did everything by the book, but the kids didn't.  I think the same applies with dog food and nutrition--what the book says, well, it will not work with every dog.  You gotta do what works best for you dog.

Sandra, both my bichon girls and my toy poodle would have a day or two of morning sickness> I think it was in the 2nd or3rd week of pregnancy.  Have long since stopped breeding though.

Myself, I had it from 6 weeks to 20 weeks and occasionally wake up in the middle of the night needing to eat now- or go visit the ceramic throne :)
Bleh.  Thankfully, 9 more weeks to go!!!! C'mooooon late August!! :)

I wonder how many other animals get morning sickness.  I had never even thought about it until this golden was sick.  She would eat, and throw up.  When she was having mornign sickness at the beginning and the end, she would mostly just lay around looking so pititful (pictures were posted)  Having been thru that myself, I had to feel sorry for her.  By the way, she is a great Mom for a first time Mom.  Hardly leaves her babies except to go potty.  Is always cleaning them and "cuddling" them.  Went to the site this morning to look at the new pictures.

no no no, dvet, you shouldn't keep out of anything...  i value what people have to say on this forum (especially those with so much experience), and i appreciate the advice/comments people share.  i didn't know much about dog nutrition until i started reading this forum.  i'm the person that fed simba all that crap because i didn't know any better.  i actually believed that pedigree would be good for simba because you see it in supermarkets everywhere.  but people in this forum opened me up.  i'm probably never going to be one of those guardians that have their dog on a raw diet.  my parents mostly work 15+ hours a day and i don't live at home, but i still want simba to have good food.

i've read some of the food threads in the archives and i realize how mean people can be.  as long as people can voice their opinion in a respectful manner, they should not get their head bitten off.

and about morning sickness, i've never had any experience with pregnant pets...  i wonder how some of you guys handle having more than one dog.  simba's a handful already.  he's also the jealous type, so i don't think he would let us have another pet.

I agree and I'm sorry for the way you were treated in the other nutrition thread; many of us on that thread felt you were treated in a disrespectful manner by one of the members and I'm glad to see you're still posting here. Most of us agree to disagree nicely and having the input of someone with your experience is really appreciated.

First of all welcome to idog houwy. Some of the food threads used to get pretty nasty; especially the raw food debates but things have been much more civil for a while now thank goodness. Searching the archives is a great way to get information about dog food. I hope you find a food that your dog does well on.

The scare last December was for the Diamond Brand Dog food and its various formulas. It was an aflatoxin found from some affected grain shipments and they had problems with their own QC at the time. No one has reported any similar problems from the other foods made at a Diamond plant on what is essentially a time-share basis. Some of these food companies don't have the money to build their own plant and so, for a fee, they can use a Diamond plant. And the problems have evidently been fixed since then.

If you think your dog will do well on Professional and they seem to do well, then feed them that. Especially if your vet confirms that they are well on that food.

When my dog had allergic reactions while eat Innova Large Breed, I still couldn't figure out if he was allergic to Barley or if it simply had too many ingredients. He does best on simple foods. So, I put him back on what I was feeding before and he's been fine ever since then. If he developed another problem and the vet said to go to this other food, I would do that or switch to homecooking. I try not to fiddle with something if it is working. He did try a sample of Eagle Pack Chicken and Rice, recently, and seemed to like it, so at least I know of another brand he may okay on. And a number of people, especially with large breeds, have had good results with Eagle Pack. And Eagle Pack and Nutro, are a few of the commercial names that also offer a working dog formula. Eagle Pack Power has been feed to a winning sled dog team along with fish in the Iditarod, the big race every March.
