Not eating in the morning. Help!

but it did NOT make gravy.

I've heard this gravy comment many times. What actually constitutes as gravy to those of  you who say this?? When i've added water to kibble it just turns it a dirty colour,i have never ever achieved a gravy effect just by adding water.Gravy to me is thick dark brown sauce, show me a kibble which turns to gravy just by me adding water and i'll run out and buy it asap!

I've put water in his kibble when he was teething and I could clearly see he was having trouble eating the dry kibble.  But I wouldn't put water in it now.  If he doesn't eat or finish whats put in there, then the kibble is thrown away and thats just a waste. Plus he has water right beside his food bowl and everytime he finishes eating he drinks plenty.

My guys get warm water, green tripe and a bit of canned in their kibble breakfast.  Spoiled beasts! But they will eat just kibble if they have to, also.  They eat so much different stuff every day they never know what's going to be put in front of them.

And  breakfast, by the way, comes after morning chores, which can be as late as 10 or 11 am.  I don't feed before, because of the slight possibility of bloat.  I did have one friend whose lurcher (BC/Saluki cross) bloated when she was active right after a meal.

I agree with the "gravy" comments.  A really picky dog isn't going to eat just because water is added to the kibble.

But, waxen, you may need to give him something other than his kibble to get him eating again.  They get to a point where they've not eaten for so long they are no longer hungry and it takes some enticing to get them eating again.  Then you can slowly go back to the kibble diet or whatever you want him on.

Waxen with all due respect,i think you need to losen up a bit on the feeding front. A diet of only dry kibble is no healthier for our dogs than it would be for our us.Variety is one of the most important things you can do for them, adding canned and fresh foods is not spoiling them,it's giving them variety and a larger array of nutrients and just plain mixing up their boring >just dry< meals for them.I feel desperately sorry for dogs who get nothing but a bowl of dry kibble everyday for all of their lives, feeding times wouldnt be as exciting and rewarding as they should be for these dogs.Food time as we all know is the highlight of most dogs days. The look of excitement on my dogs faces when i'm preparing their meals is just priceless.I know they wouldnt get as excited if they knew what was coming each and every time.

Let your dog live a little [;)] [:D]

I agree with Edie. [:)] Dogs have a much more acute sense of smell then we do and that explains how excited they get about "people" food. I think giving a dog only dry food, day in and day out, for their entire lives is depriving them.

Like several others have said, don't obsess with your dog not eating when you want him to. Would you obsess over him not urinating or deficating exactly when you want him to? ('Obsessed' may be too strong a word since you're just concerned.) Seeing as how Winston must spend his day in a cage, is he getting adequate excercise? He will not be very hungry if he's not excercising very much. Also, you've been given wise advise not to add treats/goodies/human food to his food to 'help' the process along. And, as stated, manufacturers generally advise giving more food than dogs need. If you give him one cup in the evening, perhaps he'll be hungry in the morning; then try just 1/2 cup that morning if he does appear to be hungry. Then a little more that evening; then a little less....etc etc. Experiment with lesser amounts of food until he is obviously hungry. You might even have to get up a little earlier to give him time to wake up. And please give him plenty of excercise.
    HTH!

    Ditto that!
I'm not sure if your dog does "spend his day in a cage" or not,but if he does and isnt getting daily exercise this could also be the cause of his inappetance.A good workout always makes me feel hungry.
I bet if you got up an hour earlier and took him for a good off lead run,he would come home hungry.
Hunger and not eating aside, all dogs who are caged before the owner goes to work for however long should be taken for a long walk to tire them out.Imagine someone locking us up in a cage an hour or so after we woke up from sleeping all night, the last thing we would feel like doing is going to sleep again, altho we probably would try as we would have really no other choice.

Oh I have loosen up on the eating issue.  Once a day and he's now doing fine.  Since we've gone to the once a day feeding he's eaten everything thats put down (not gobbled up either, eating at a nice pace) and during the day he doesn't sit by his bowl and whine for food.  As for getting "advice" that he shouldn't be getting only fed dry kibble and too mix other stuff in there, I'm not going that route.  I did try that at one point a few months ago and it got to a point when he wouldn't eat his food unless he had goodies in his bowl.  I used to put a dollup of yogurt or some soft yummy treat mixed in but then when I would just put a bowl of kibble he wouldn't eat it anymore.  Every once in awhile I do put something extra in his bowl but not every meal (about once a week).   And just to answer a couple of other concerns, Boomer gets exercising daily (hour long walks, hour long leash free running at the dog park, playing games of fetch, every single day).  I have tried the waking up an hour early taking him for a walk to see if that would engage his morning appetite but it didn't.  All he did when we returned was drink water then lay down cause he was tired from the walk.  But all is good now and thanks for everyone's advice.

Ok, instead of thinking of it as a thick brown gravy like grandma used to make, just think of it as kibble flavored water. At any rate, my guys love it :)

Edited to add:   I primarily add water to my guys' kibbles because my 2 bichon girls have had trouble with UTI's and bladder crystals in the past. Since I've started adding water to thier dry food, they have had no reoccurrances, so for use, it's more of a necessity than "flavoring."
