thats why i picked the lamb and rice to begin with... they both have allergies and was hoping it would help that a little.  and it seems to somewhat... they are still licking their feet and casey has another ear infection that we are treating....  love this time of year!!!

thanks for your help...   I only have 2 cans left of the wet Nutro food so we are going to start weaning them.... wont they love that...lol...  and if it doesnt firm up his stools will take him in to the vet and make sure he doesnt have a problem first and then maybe switch their food again....

have a great rest of the week!

So another form of Nutro?? or just a totally different brand

It's up to you and your vet, with whom you should consult first. Let me lead you further down the path of sin to hell and suggest finding an rx formula, per your vet.

I also agree with you that she might go back to the dry kibble to see if that solves the problem. But she may be determined to switch, anyway. And there's all kinds of info here and everywhere.

Is this a trend you've seen in general with raw fed dogs? Are there many cases you know of personally of raw fed dogs living beyond their life expectancy?

I was interested in a response to this question, though it may be OT.  I guess it would be better off with its own thread.

You're right, it is OT and I probably shouldn't have brought it up but that hasn't stopped me yet. [;)]  I was thinking of starting a thread on the subject too.

There are so many allergens this time of year that their paw licking may not be food related. However, the loose stools seem to be a reaction to the food if he checks out fine at the vet. I would try a fish based formula, as most dogs don't have allergies to fish, and it is good for sensitive stomachs. I have personal experience with Eagle Pack Holistic Fish & Oatmeal and Fromm Four-Star Whitefish & Potato. I've seen both formulas offset allergy and digestive issues, but nothing works 100%. I would suggest finding a good fish based food and trying it out for a week or two (small 5 lb to 15 lb bag). That week or two should tell you whether or not it will fix the stools. You'll have to wait a month or two to see if either will 'cure' any allergy issues.

Ever hear of Pappy Boone?  He was a golden Retriever that died this srping a couple of months of so after his 19th birhtday.

Sorry, a little off topic here but I was astonished to read Pappy Boone's age when he passed on. The only one I had heard of was Max who also passed away after he turned nineteen ([linkhttp://www.topgoldenretrieversites.net/blog/johnwa01330.shtml]http://www.topgoldenretrieversites.net/blog/johnwa01330.shtml[/link]).

Considering the average age for Golden Retrievers, I find it pretty amazing. Are you aware of any others?

thanks everybody... taking casey to vet on Saturday...although last night and this morning we only did 1 teaspoon of the wet food mixed really well in the dry and they ate  it..  but didnt notice this morning if he had loose stools or not... the turkey would rather play soccer this morning than take of buisiness.  guess i will check tonight ....  we will probably just stick with the nutro for another week or two without the wet and see how it goes...  he doesnt act like he feels bad or anything... i just think his stomach just dosnt like the wet food.... hope thats what it is... cheaper that way too...lol...

    thanks for your advice... [:)]

No, I don't know of others.  I belong to several golden retriever boards and when he hit his 18th birhtday a year ago, it was posted on all of them, with sites to go to read about his lifet was sadly posted a couple of months later about his death.

To me it is amazing that the average life span for a golden is 10 to 12 years (My Buck turned 11 in Feb.) and this dog had spent 8 years in a nursing home getting no exercise, weighing over 150 pounds and getting no dog food, just table scraps, yet lived to be 19 years old--and even lived two years after a massive heartattack while having a tooth pulled.  Everything said he should never have lived to be a normal age--horrible food, no exercise, terribling over weight.    There is just no explaining it.

Oh, and as far as i know, on all my golden boards combined, there are only 2 goldens older than my Buck.  One turned 12 just about the time he turned 11 and another turned 12 a couple of weeks ago.  AND for the those interested, these dogs are fed every kind of way way possible--med grade, top grade, home cooked and raw.  Some show their dogs, some are in agility and couple are service dogs, a couple are small time breeders with like 4 females and  1 male and in each case, those dogs like a life of luxary, are indoor dogs, but gets lots of exercise, vet care, etc. Thbey have all kinds of certs for hips, eyes, etc.  One lady has a beautiful golden bitch and at age 1, it was found she has slight HD, so she was spayed and is just a "kid". (we are waiting puppies any day from one of the goldens on one of the boards--her first litter.)

I'm glad you're going to the vet. As I've said before, good luck with whatever you do, even if you stay with the dry food you've been using.

We used to have a Golden Retriever in our neighbourhood. My sister grew up with him and everyone adored him. He escaped on average once every two weeks to scout the neighbourhood and didn't come back one day. Everyone was devastated.

It happened last year, and at that time, I think he was nearly 12 years old and perfectly healthy, except for a touch of arithritis.
