So far she's holding her own.  She's feeling good and eating well.  We are seeing the vet for a follow up white blood cell count this week.  She's also due for her annual check-up.  June 15th is her 3 year anniversary with us.  So, we'll see.  If the white cell count is still low they will be doing further testing.  If it's OK, they will just keep an eye on it several times over the year.

Lori , I hope Willow's white blood cell count is better; keep us posted .

monzie- Thank you for sharing! I will never, ever feed Abady! I've heard some not so great things about the food already.......  now there's no question in my mind about it being a food I would NOT feed.

Anything with a stomach can get salmonella!  [;)]  I'm not sure but I think even fish can get it.

We've got a huge level of salmonella in our envirnments thanks largely to the confinement production of animal foods.  That's one consideration.  We are all exposed to it and other bugs all the time.  We wash our entire bodies a lot - how often do your pets have the chance to wash off environmental contamination?  They aren't meant to do that - daily baths wouldn't be healthy for most dogs, for instance.

So your pets experience much higher levels of contaminants than we do, all the time, and handle it well.  We can't protect them from that.  I do what I can to ensure that the meat I feed is clean, as naturally raised as possible, and locally grown where possible.  Beyond that, I feel more scared feeding commercial foods that I haven't seen prepared, than raw meat that I can handle myself.  I do still feed both, however.  You can't put your dog in a bubble.  Heck, my heart dog Ben could get smashed by the ram any day and seriously injured - I can't stop him from doing what he loves just because there's some risk.

With that said, I might point out that I would NEVER start a dog of any size on a piece of raw meat and bon (chicken in particular) as huge as a drumstick.  That's like feeding a baby a steak and broccoli with bearnaise sauce as their first solid meal - what do you THINK would happen?  Raw shouldn't be rushed into - you'd switch your dog gradually if you were changing even dog food formulas - why would it be different going to a whole new paradigm?  MOST really can handle it if changed over gradually instead of just throwing down a quarter pound or so of raw meat and bone.

Well, I decided to put them all back on Dr. Harvey's today, I know what's in it, add the digestive enzymes, along with some plain yogurt, cottage cheese and get this Olewo carrots(cool stuff) they are like pellets you add water and some oil, it gives the dogs fiber and fills them up with only a little bit.  It also strenghtens the immune system and blood cells, helps the poop(lol) and gets rid of anything yucky like worms, etc. a little goes a long way. You've got to check it out [linkhttp://www.olewo.de]www.olewo.de[/link]  so I'm praying this all will work and Dusty will digest better.  He seems better tonight.
So anyhow, I went to go get the Dr. Harvey's and the store where I had purchased the Abady, has hardly any Abady on their shelves now, good, I'd never want anyone or any animal to ever get sick like mine did, it's sad and awful scary.
    Take Care All.

I too was a firm Abady believer, I mean I thought this man was right and everyone else was wrong,

Why is this? This seems to be the general attitude of all abady feders i have come across. They seem to be...well...extreme [>:] Their food is the best, everything else sucks, the almighty robert abady is a god and everything that comes out of his mouth is gospel.

I'm sure there are abady feeders out there that dont act 'brainwashed' like this, but to be honest i havnt met one yet [&:]

Thanks Dyan and Jessies Mom for the information!  Much appreciated.  I'll find another way to keep his teeth clean.  The vets did an x-ray to check for a blockage and ended up finding  a tumor in his throat :-(  Now we have to decide what to do about that.  From what I've heard Beagles are prone to tumors.  Has anyone else heard that before?

    You're welcome beaglelove; I'm sorry that your dog has a tumor; I haven't heard of one in the throat but others here probably have; I suggest you start a thread under Illness, Disease, or Condition;

You will most likely get more information there about throat tumors. I found what seems to be a good alternative to bones at the vet recently; they're called C.E.T. Hextra Chews:
                                                                       [linkhttp://www.24hourpet.com/dog-cet-hextra-c-63_103_107.html?osCsid=8a6b51fda43525c541849d3220fd56ea]http://www.24hourpet.com/dog-cet-hextra-c-63_103_107.html?osCsid=8a6b51fda43525c541849d3220fd56ea[/link]

and they're a lot cheaper at this link than at the vet. They have chlorhexedine to kill bacteria and according to my vet it only takes 10 minutes of chewing for the bacteria that causes plaque to be killed. Jessie loves them which is impressive since she doesn't like most rawhides and one Chew lasts her an hour which is also very impressive since she makes short work out of any rawhide except for the compressed ones. I had been giving Jessie soup bones and marrow bones to clean her teeth but a few weeeks ago she acted very uncomfortable after a bowel movement and there were bone chips in the stool from the bone she chewed the day before so I decided not to give bones to her anymore. Please keep us updated on what happens to your dog; I hope it's not cancer.

I have not personally had any problems with tumors with any of my beagles or known anyone who has. My beagles are field trial type beagles and I believe that beagles breed for field work have different genetics than those bred for comformation. JMO I have heard from different people that beagles are prone to this and that, but it's just not been my experience or that of many of the other beaglers that I know.

    Edie:
I don't know why, but if you go on his website or any site that carries his food, there are articles that he has written. If you read the articles it honestly seems to make sense, he even wrote a book, not very big by any means, I read it in a day but he talks about sapinons in food (beet pulp, oatmeal, any veggies, etc. ) and reading this you actually begin to understand what the man says, he has some way of make you believe he's right.
But, if he's so right then all the other nutritionists, dog food companies and us are wrong, I highly doubt the majority can be so wrong and he be so right, but it is worth thinking about. He doesn't believe in a lot of fiber, well then you have a dog going diarrhea ALL the time, so something's not right.  I just know my dogs got sick on the granular formula badly. And if he's so right then we'd know more about him.

OT but I love the shades; neat affect. [:D]

Is there a truth in saying that a dogs digestive system is too acid for salmonella to survive and that the digesting process is too short. I thought I read it somewhere but I could be wrong. I feed my lab Omas Pride.
