Eagle Pack vs Innova

I tried Innova and Marley had the runs the entire time...moved to Eagle Pack Large Breed Puppy...he's fine...our next bag will be EP Holistic Large Breed. My baby is growing up. He now gets Big Boy Food.

I feed supplements too and some raw.

Janice - Interesting that the chicken fat in EP doesn't bother Jessie; perhaps it's in too low an amount.  I'm afraid to take the chance with Jackson - he is so sensitive to any chicken - so I stick with "poultry pure" stuff like SG Wolf Cub and TO Elk.

My other one likes EVO canned though, as well as the Health Bars.

John, I've read that chicken fat is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction because of the way it is processed (purified) when it is used in dog food. Maybe it depends on how sensitive your dog is to chicken.

I've read/heard the same, Janice.  However, Jackson is so sensitive to chicken and it is possible (per Mordanna) for fat to trigger an allergic reaction such that I avoid it.  I wouldn't shock me to learn that whippets are more sensitive in this respect (reacting to a low level of an allergen).  Glad to know you aren't experiencing any issues.

Jessie's ears and muzzle are bothering her a little but it's not her food; she's been on the Eagle Pack Fish, which has fish oil instead of chicken fat, the last several weeks because she needs to lose a few pounds and it has the lowest  fat and calories of the holistic formulas.  She has inhallant allergies and is on allergen immunotherapy. She hasn't needed any antihistamines for a long time but this spring seems to be worse than usual for pollen. I started her on Tavist yesterday.
Whippets are beautiful dogs; has Jackson been doing well on the TO?  I started Jessie on the TO Ocean Fish in February but stopped feeding it to her when all the questions surfaced about their customer service and quality control. They have several formulas without chicken and I like the amount of protein in their foods.

In my limited experience with EVO, I've only run across 1 dog out of 4 that did well on it. The other 3 had some serious runs, even after a very slow transition. Some people, obviously, feed the formula and have terrific results. As said before, it just depends on your dog and what s/he does well on. We don't sell Innova through our store mainly because the distribution is pretty pricey, but also because all of their formulas right now are chicken & turkey based. I read (on here I think) that they're finally starting to come out with some foods that use different meat sources, which may make their distribution pricing a little bit easier to swallow.

We sell a lot of Eagle Pack, mainly because they hit so many different protein sources and their food is very reasonably priced. I think the only formula that isn't as cheap or cheaper to feed than pet store brands is Fish & Oatmeal. Also Eagle Pack runs a lot of coupon programs which makes the price of feeding even cheaper. Just going by local prices, Eagle Pack looks cheaper to me than Innova in the end.

    For a 50 pound dog:
Eagle Pack HS Lamb Meal & Rice (33lbs @ $35.99)
    57¢ per day

    Innova EVO Dog Dry (28.6lbs @ $46.99)
    81¢ per day

Regardless of cost, I still say feed what your pet does the best on, if you can afford it.
