Canned/Dry or both?

    Canned/Dry or both?

Ricky's eating 5 small meals of dry Evo a day and appears to
be doing great but a number of people suggest feeding canned.

When I spoke with Nature and our local food supplier they both
said if your dog drinks an adiquit amount of water and doesn't
have a problem with the dry kibble there is no reason to change.

I really want the best for Ricky and we'll switch to canned if
the dry is really lacking but how do you know?

What do you feed your furbabies- canned, dry or both
and what's your thoughts about it?

    Thanks in advance!

I feed both. My dogs don't normally drink a lot of water -- to me anyway -- and I was concerned as they are seniors and are eating a high protein dry food (Evo). The weather is also quite hot in my area.

The dogs don't like the kibble to be soaked while feeding so I add canned food for meat/tripe/organs and moisture instead.

    Thanks Sakura!

Do you feed equal amount of canned and dry?

I feed up to 50% on grain free canned formulas. When using canned formulas with grains, I don't feed more than 25% canned / 75% dry otherwise their stools would become soft.

I have fed both dry and canned together. Usually 75% dry 25% canned, which with my small dogs was 1/4cup dry and 1 T canned.  They love it!

    Thank you!

I think I'm going to mix 50% dry Evo with 50% canned Evo.

I just don't understand if dry kibble is so bad why are
    so many people using it?

Our lab gets only dry food.... but our new GSD gets one can mixed with dry... at least until she gains weight and gets used to getting regular meals and will eat on her own.

I now have changed Kobe's diet to 50% dry and 50% canned. He loves it and eats it everytime it's put in front of him which is a change because when it was just dry food he'd usually wait until night to eat it.. He's just a picky eatter I think..

I don't think dry kibble is bad at all; Jessie gets about 75% dry supplemented with canned or home cooking; it depends on your situation. [:)] Sakura said she feeds canned to add extra moisture to her senior dogs food because they are eating a high protein diet; the reason would be to protect their kidneys but younger dogs on a dry high protein kibble wouldn't need canned for the extra moisture. By the way, your dog is adorable; he looks so cute in that outfit. Canned food has more fat than dry so you need to keep that in mind if your dog gains weight easily, and since canned food is about 78% water you need to feed a lot more of it to equal the amount of nutrients that are in dry food, which is only 10% moisture, so feeding canned food to a large dog is very expensive.

Thank you that's his favorite costume[:)]

My dilemma is that Ricky is doing so well
and loves his dry food but I keep hearing that
canned food much better then dry. I'm happy
feeding dry but I'm worried that not good enough[:(]

    Jessie looks like a sweetheart!

You're feeding a quality kibble.  If your dog is doing well on it, you have no reason to worry.

I also feed a mixture of kibble and canned, but that is just because Odie prefers that.  It isn't necessary.  He is a spoiled brat.  You would think he is some kind of blue-blooded purebred, but he is a mutt we adopted from the shelter.  I remind him of his heritage on a regular basis, but it has no effect.

I feed Simba dry food we tried mixing in a little canned last week to see if he liked it well he did but he got the worst bout of diarrhea ever. He has a sensetive stomache I think.

So im gonna stick to dry from now on.

Thank you Billy that's good to hear!!

I'm so thrilled with the results from the Evo and
Ricky's happy with the dry but he'll eat anything!!!
He's drinking a good amount of water so I really
don't want to change anything unless the dry is
    bad for him.

I can see Odie has a face that's hard to refuse!!

    Thanks Sarahlou!

Ricky also has a sensitive stomach and I hate
to mess with a good thing and rock the boat.

What kind of dog is Simba? He's beautiful!
