dog wont eat raw

    • Gold Top Dog
i just want everyone to know, although i dont mind the debate if thats what you guys want, that i didnt start the thread to become another debate on kibble vs. raw.  i just wanted advice about how to satisfy jakes chewing since he wont chew on the raw bones.   anyway, i decided to give rawhide a try since everything is evil anyway.  he really LOVES  chicken basted knotted rawhide "bones".  so i guess thats what we ll stick with for now.

Ron, you managed to hit me a couple times there.  And we HAVEN'T raised the MS Walk goal.  In case anyone is interested in helping with that, there is a thread in NDR titled 2006 MS Walk.

I'm also on the computer frequently.  In my case that doesn't mean I've got money coming out of my ears, it means I haven't been fortunate enough to find a job.  When there is a break in the action at my house, or I take a break from whatever it is I'm doing, I sit down at the puter.

Jaye, if you are going to use rawhide, the PRESSED isn't quite as dangerous.  But still please really monitor Jake.   When the rawhide starts to get slimey, take it away.  Once it gets to the slimey point, it's REALLY easy for pieces to break off, be swallowed and cause an impaction.

    Jaye,

Maddi won't eat thighs that are thawed when I give them to her, Have you tried giving Jake a raw, but frozen bone. By the time Maddi gets to the bone, the thing is thawed, but I don't think she likes chewyness of the meat.

Well, that one backfired. I wasn't meaning that a person is rich becuase they have access to a computer and I am away that some people have jobs that allow them to be online for quite a bit of the day.

I mentioned your walk Glenda, because it is a worthy concern. It seems to many here, raw/kibble is a weighty concern, also. IMO, most money raised for anything doesn't come from millionaires, it comes from working slobs such as myself. I was trying to inspire people that if we can raise money, have the time, and seem to care about this so much, we should somehow arrange a study.

I don't know if there are govt rules against running a raw feeding trial, though the govt already has a position on raw and bones.

And luvs4gsds, I do not doubt you and the oldest dog you had living on raw, just as my cat lived almost 17 years on Purina. And I'm just as financially strapped as anyone else. My property taxes were due Jan 31 and I still haven't raised the money to pay those off, so I've been working side jobs until 6 in the evening and I worked both Saturday and Sunday this last weekend and I will be working this next Saturday, again. Yet, I'm squeezing in i-dog time.

In this country, nothing is impossible. Except for maybe an independent raw/kibble/homecooked feeding study wherein any supplements added would be double-blind so that not even the test administrator knew what brand of supps were used. The govt once spent $500,000 on a study to determine if bovine flatulence was creating a whole in the ozone layer.

I am sorry ron2. If I flew off the handle some what. But I'm not here to pass judgment on anyone who feeds kibble, cooked or raw. And if it seem that way then I am truely sorry.
    • Gold Top Dog
Yeah, me too Ron.  I think I'm working on stress overload.  I'm GLAD that you mentioned the walk, cuz that gave me a chance to post where they can find the link......

And soon I hope I won't be home fulltime, but that one kinda hit a nerve.  Remember, I'm the one who's been hit below the belt more than once over my post count.....and likely the ONLY one on idog who is tickled that it went away!

I didn't get the impression that you were trying to convert anyone. And it's not the first time I have said or written something that brought about the direct opposite reaction I was expecting. FWIW, there are days where I've ticked off everyone simply because I woke up and took another breath. And I truly do not doubt that you've had dogs live a long time on raw. FWIW, I think longetivity has a lot to do with genetics. My dog has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years. He will be 3 in July. If he lives another 10 years, that is the best that can be expected and if he lives longer, that is a bonus. In my wife's family there is one old couple ( I believe they turn 100 this year) and they eat the same barbecue and potato salad and green beans with bacon that the rest of us do. Her family's genetics have people living to be older than dirt.

But it would be nice to have scientifically analyzed results of the strengths and weaknesses of each feeding style.

I agree whole-heartidly (sp? lol, it doesn't look right). It would be nice to see someone who isn't usually involved with pets to come in (so hopefully they are less biased). Perhaps a zoologist with a specialty in wild carnivorous animals... but maybe that would be too biased well... I dunno. But, then again, someone who could just put their biased views aside and not skew or do something to skew the results.

jaye,  I'm sorry we got OT on your thread. I have given Jessie rawhides for years. My vet said they are safe and he has never seen a dog with an impactation from them and he has been practicing for over 30 years. I let Jessie consume the entire rawhide bone but she chews every bit of them into small pieces before she swallows them. If you have a strong chewer like I do the compressed bones last much longer than the retriever rolls or the bones with the knot on the ends; Jessie can finish off the later two in less than half an hour and I always get the large size, but she's the size of a Lab.  The reason Glenda said the compressed bones are safer is because some dogs will chew the knot off of the ones that have it and try to swallow the knot whole. Jessie's teeth always look better after she's chewed a rawhide; that and regular brushing do a good job of keeping their teeth clean. You can find toothbrushes and flavored toothpaste at stores like PetsMart. A good way to begin is by letting the dog lick some of the toothpaste off your finger; then start by gently brushing the teeth for a short time and gradually increase the amount of time each day until you're brushing all the teeth in about a week. My vet said you only need to brush the outside of the teeth as the tongue keeps the inside edges of the teeth clean.

luv4gsds; I think it's great that your dogs are living so long; you have to be doing something right. By the way, I have a "special needs" son and have to be at home instead of working even though I majored in education in college. He has health problems and is developmentally disabled; I will pray for your son's health.

I had to stop giving mine rawhides, alas, after twice KayCee tried to swallow big soft chunks and then gagged and gagged and then hacked them up.    She is the only dog i ever had that did that.  It seems not fair to not give Buck and Honey rawhides because of kayCee, but I just am scared that somehow that sneaky little girl would end up getting hold of one and choking.

glenda, thanks for the advice, ill keep a close eye on him. maybe ill give the pressed a try.  the knotted ones just looked fun.

pumaward, yeah i give them frozen, jake wont even sniff it frozen, after it thaws a bit a he sniffs it and walks away.  i think its spelled whole-heartedly, you were very close hehe.

jessie, that makes sense about the knots, i dont think jake is a very strong chewer, hes had this first rawhide for a couple days now and theres hardly a dent in it.

I see I'm not the only one in the boat with a child with medical problems. Thanks jessies_mom my son needs all the prayers he can get and I'll be praying for your son as well. That is one reason I got into Reiki.

Somtimes I get the no knot rawhide bones.

    And raw shank bones.

Sandra, I guess you are smarter and/or a better mommy then I was. I had a pitty who LOVED rawhides. She was the one I used to cook a bunch of soup bones for so she would have something to keep her busy  when anyone came to our house, because she was a pain in the "you know what!"   But she used to gag on rawhides all the time.  I have to say I was much younger and not so much of a worrier, but she ate tons of rawhides all the way to the end, and they did get slimmy and soft and she would try to swallow them when they were too big, and gag them back up and chew them more until she could get it down.  I always figured ALL dogs did that, and they take care of themselves.       Now I won't give Bubblegum a rawhide because I'm afraid of them.
luv,,,,,,,,,,,,that is so interesting about you taking up Reiki, I started a thread about it a few months ago,,,wanted to get "into it!"

    And raw shank bones.

I ;prefer raw shank bones and soup bones over rawhide and so does Jessie but they're hard to find in my area; I'm able to get some about twice a month, so the rawhide is a back up. I'm a real wimp when it comes to giving her bones so I give her ones she can chew on but not break pieces off to swallow. She eats the cartilage ( round knuckles?) from the soup bones and that cleans her teeth fairly well. Any chicken bones are out anyway because she's allergic to chicken. I always freeze the bones first to kill parasites.
