question?

From what I understand, carrots have a lot of sugar in them. Cooking releases that sugar from them as well as making it more digestable to a dog.

Again, they get NOTHING from carrots or any other veggie unless WE do the processing for them that their bodies can't do...namely breaking down the cell walls.  That's why we puree or cook and mash.

Carrots ARE high on the glycemic index.  So are peas, corn, any of the 'sweeter' veggies, so I'd watch using ONLY carrots.  No need to give them a blood sugar rush!

I would sure like to see a source indicating that there is no nutritional value in canned vegatables.  It makes no sense to me.  Do you have one?

I am also very careful about the cal/phos ratio in veggies.  I am worry wart when it comes to kidney function...

I blanch Romeo's veggies and then I puree the heck out of them and either feed with yogurt or by themselves or mixed with his meat.  His fruit is all pureed too, or I squeeze out the juice and make ice cubes with it and give when we come back from a long walk.  He thinks I am the best mommy in the world.  I don't give him too much broccoli or bell peppers, because even steamed makes him gassy.

There is nutritional value in canned veggies, it says so right on the can!  I think its just something thats been around for a while that when you cook veggies you lose some nutrient so raw are better... peronally that difference has never ment too much to me, and ceratinly in a dog who cant digest them raw.... canned are fine IMO.  But I think the OP was saying that canned has less nutrients b/c theyre cooked and maybe have more sodium and all...  but not sure.  Youll be hard pressed to find something to tell you that canned veggies have no nutrients tho[:)]

Thanks for all the great info. Now I'm a little worried about high blood sugar because carrots are sweet. I finally find something they love and it might cause a problem.
Ho Hum...,but one 14 1/2 oz. can split between three dogs should'nt be too much sugar right? Also, I never said that canned veggies weren't nutritious, it was post #2.Thanks again. One more question, does rinsing the veggies get rid of some of the salt?
