Bil-Jac

I know that the breeder that I'm purchasing my Alaskan Klee Kai from feeds her puppies Bil-Jac, for most of the reasons already posted. As a rule, AKKs are pretty finicky eaters, and feeding the pups Bil-Jac helps to maintain their weight through puppyhood. When the pups reach adulthood, she gradually switches their food out to a normal adult food. Since she's had great results from Bil-Jac with her pups, I'm going to continue to feed it to Honor. Like many have said, it's a decent food, and is good for the picky/light eaters.

It's got some suspicious ingredients- chicken by-products, which is the "garbage" left over after they take all the usuable parts-- mostly intestines, which aren't terribly nutritious. Also laden with sugar and corn, ingredients I prefer to avoid.

For those interested, one can compare the nutrient profile.  I think you will find the profile just about equal to Chicken Meal.
I don't think one holds any advantage over the other pound for pound.  Personal aesthetics and appeal ;plays a bigger factor than that of proteins and nutrients.  If you don't feel good about something, then you stay away obviously.

I fed Cherokee Bil-Jac for a while (maybe a year-ish? I can't for the life of me remember what foods I've fed for how long..should've written it down..). She did great, looked great, was minimally itchy, but her teeth got FOUL. Absolutely filthy. And you could smell her breath as soon as you walked in the room. Quite honestly though, if it weren't for the nasty preservatives in that food, I would try it again and just give her bones more often for the teeth. But I'm not willing to pour carcinogens into her. JMO.

One of the big differences is in the lower ash content that by-products have, that is why many manufacturers use it.

I'm glad this thread came along- it's really informative. Since moving, my dogs have all become about 5 times more active than they were before- they have alot of room to run and alot of stuff to do out here. Culley and Butter have both become so active that I've had a hard time keeping weight on them. Culley weighs about 35 pounds, and he went from eating 2 1/2 cups a day to almost SIX cups a day after our move...and I'm *still* starting to see more ribs than I'm comfortable with. Same with Butter- he's nearly doubled his food intake. At first I thought they were wormy, but I worm them every 6 months- had fecals done on them both, they came back clear- then I realized that they're going non-stop now from sunup to sundown, when before they only got a couple of hours of exercise per day.

We've ALWAYS had a hard time keeping weight on Pepito, too- he has the fastest metabolism I've ever seen. He gets nice and fat after a meal, and within a few hours, he looks like he hasn't eaten in days. He's *always* been that way.

I've seen Bil-Jac, but didn't like the ingredients, so I never considered feeding it. I didn't realize it was so good for weight gain. Right now I'm feeding a rotaion of foods ( Avoderm, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Castor and Pollux, and Maxximum Nutrition) along with some home cooked meals and some raw meals a few times a week. I'm thinking now I'll go out and get some Bil-Jac for Culley, Butter, and Pepito and add some in with their regular food to see if it helps them gain some weight.

I'm really hopeful, now. I was getting embarrassed with how lean Butter and Culley have gotten from all of their unning around.

The frozen is the only kind I buy for mine, it has no preservatives. I know only parts of the country carry it though.
