I had a picky eater for years.  My brindlewonderkid.  Picky eater and didn't care much.  I did what several people here already suggested, just wish I'd done so earlier.  He spent most of his life at a nice coursing weight which was sort of okay, except when some girl down the street came in season.  Then off the feed and back to too skinny.

What finally put weight on him was Evo plus muttloaf.  I cut the recipe for muttloaf in 1/2 and give him about 1/4 a cup with his kibble mixed with warm water.  He also doesn't get to free feed.  I also wonder if you fixed his meal for him, fussed over how wonderful it was, used warm water for aroma, then put the bowl in a crate and locked him out of the crate for a little while if he'd get more excited about it.

Truley, Your guy looks like a typical gawky teen ager. He`ll fill out over the next 18 months.

That was in reference to Truely`s dog. The original posters dog looks a bit underweight.

without a pair of laser eyes staring you down!

LOL,perfect description. It's amazing how long they can stare at you without blinking,my guys burn holes right through me [8|]

Truley have you considered feeding something other than nutro max? This would not be on my list of foods for producing condition or weight gain,it's full of fillers which he will be pooping straight out instead of digesting and utilising. I honestly dont think you'll have much chance on getting condition on him until you change to a better food.

Misskiwi have you double checked the height of your folks GSD?

I am going to wait a few weeks and see what his current diet is doing for him, his output is not as high as I thought it would be. I have sent away for some samples, or requested them from a couple of companies, Canidea being one of them.

Dawn, I don't know if it's Kaiser's age or maybe the canidae that made him start putting on weight. You can only see his ribs now when he is running, all stretched out. He eats about 3 cups of canidae lamb and rice per day.

Lets see... Chance is now eating 4 cups of Innova a day (in 2-3 meals) with very little encouragement. Its barely been a week, so I haven't taken him to the vet to get him weighed. He had some soft stools for a couple days, even woke me up at 4am one morning because he had to go, but his stools have since become very nice, and I think his system is handling the denser food pretty well.

Chance is learning to walk at heel using a gentle leader, and my mom gets home from Washington tomorrow (her mom had a stroke) and hopefully Chance will start getting daily walks from her from now on.

Oh, and I found a pet store in town that carries Bil Jac... so I have a bag of that as a backup if Chance decides he doesn't like the Innova.

I haven't managed to wrangle up my dad to help me hold Chance and double check his measurements, but I'm working on it. You can be sure it will be posted as soon as I find out.

    Hey all,

I got some help from my dad and a good tape measure, and Chance is officially 30 inches at the shoulder.

Hi...have you had a chance to try adding the yogurt, yet?

Chance is doing so well on the Innova I don't think he's going to need it. In fact, I think he's probably gained a couple pounds and will probably get his food decreased in another couple weeks...

Hi, I'm new here but I recognize Misskiwi from another forum.  I've had GSDs for over 10 years and Tessa was the worst when it came to keeping weight on her.  She was 3 before she stopped looking she was being starved.  She was a very active girl (okay, she was non stop) but she also got double the amount of food the boys got in order to try to get her to gain some weight.

I'm glad the new food is working for Chance. Have you thought about adding a digestive enzyme like Prozyme to his food for some extra help?  It worked for Tess.  Then all of a sudden at 3 she decided that she'd gain enough weight to look healthy and she stayed pretty consistent her whole life.

I have no good picky eater advice (both of my dogs would eat themselves silly if I let them), but I thought that in reference to mental stimulation I'd suggest feeding him out of a Buster Cube.  My lab gets about 50x more excited than usual when I feed him out of his Buster Cube.  It might make meals a bit more interesting.....
