BUT, he had a mother who would literally get up from the table and fix him something else if he wouldn't eat what she'd made for dinner. MY kids would have done without.
When I was a kid, we had choices. We could eat what was on the table or we could go hungry. Example, I didn't like brussel sprouts, so my mother and grandmother loved to cook brussel sprouts. I would eat those first so that they wouldn't be the last taste in my mouth. Then, I could politely refuse seconds. And I survived. Another reason for eating whatever was on the plate was to earn dessert.
As an adult, I will eat whatever the host cooks. I may not particularly care for something but I will eat at least a small serving of it. I'm thankful for their generosity and effort. When I was 20, without a place to live, out of a job and waiting on one last paycheck, I went for 5 days and nights without food. I just had water out of the tap, and I absconded with a lime left in the fridge, staying at someone's apt who was about to be evicted for non-payment of rent. I have been without and I've seen a few rough times and it helps me to appreciate when someone cooks for me, even if it's not something I normally eat. I will eat it and be thankful for the bounty.
My wife doesn't like to eat the same thing twice in a row, usually. Whereas I could have pizza for lunch and then have pizza again for dinner. Our friend with the Great Pyr, will make deviled eggs when she knows we're coming over for dinner because I will nearly perform a running tackle to get at them. For Easter, she made a dozen and I made off with at least half. Of course, she specifically made them knowing I would like them.
