rotating food

    One more thing:
Also, I want to do a heartworm prevention this year.  The beef cube HeartGuard that I normally give them does not have ingredients on the package, on the website, nor does my vet have a list.  Any suggestions about how to get the ingredients as I don't want to give it to him if it has ANY trace of chicken or egg in it.  Does everyone on here even use heartworm prevention every year? I have but am hearing it isnt necessary to treat every month during the season.  Thanks in advance guys.

Sick and listless doesn't sound like an allergic reaction.  Sounds like DH maybe gave him too much fatty skin and upset his tummy.

If I had an allergic dog, I wouldn't mess with his food.  I'd stick with what works for him and forget about rotating.

No, he gave him a tiny piece (like the size of a quarter) of boneless skinless chicken breast.  I thought rotating Protein sources was good for allergy stricken dogs?

I've heard there's going to be a red meat... are there going to be more?? Did they give you a timeline??

Sorry I don't get on line much at the end of the week.
Anyway I heard at least one more red meat and possibly a fish variety. Don't know what timeline we are looking at though. The pet shop owner just said they were working on it.

Pippin is enjoyin her NV and Merri is liking it too. Merri gets it only at night and kibble in the morning but Pip is just on the NV frozen for a bit. No problems with the switch at all. Stools got a bit larger the first day but are fine now. We will see how long this bag lasts. I amy keep it just for Pip and once in a while as a treat for Merri since she is not so picky. It is a bit more pricy than Evo but you don't have to feed a lot.

Last time and then I'll drop the rotating questions.  If i get an answer, last question started to get answered then i got in trouble about my font size and my question got lost [:(
my question was on pg 3 and  started. I just looked up the NV...

Are you saying IF I'm going to rotate(i use innova now) it would be best to stay with the same brand that makes different varieties of their dry food like NB or NV so that the proteins change some but are still are close enough in ingredients to not cause a problem.

I would do raw once in awhile also but it scare me. Does it mean i could just go to the store buy the same chicken parts i would cook for me but just give it to them, bone and all?
their not going to keep it in there dishes while they eat it so how do i keep the area clean, can they take it outside? and if yes do i have to spray down the yard afterwords? i don't want them or us getting sick because i don't know what I'm doing.

also when you say you home cook what are you making them and do you add supplements or do they get that from the dry you feed?

I'm NOT an expert on food allergies.  In MY allergic dog, the problem showed on her skin and as yeasty ears, not in sick and listless, so that's a new one to me.  All I can say is that when I found something that really worked for her I never strayed from it.

It took me a few mins to find the site I went to, here it is for the calculator:   [linkhttp://www.mycockerspaniel.com]www.mycockerspaniel.com[/link]
Scroll down the page to the bottom, and click on 'Nutrition' and there are several calculators for you to try.  It is interesting info.

PS I hope it is okay to list the site, I don't own a cocker but its how I figured out my dogs k/cal requirements.  :)  J

Also page 2 of this nutrition section has a thread about figuring out K/cals for dogs, it was helpful too.   Jules

I do not do RAW so can't help you much in that dept..  I do know that you need to do lots of research before attempting to feed a raw diet for your dog.  It's not just throwing them a piece of chicken every once in a while.  Check around the forums here there is a lot of info on different sites to look up.   Good luck!

BUT, he had a mother who would literally get up from the table and fix him something else if he wouldn't eat what she'd made for dinner. MY kids would have done without.

When I was a kid, we had choices. We could eat what was on the table or we could go hungry. Example, I didn't like brussel sprouts, so my mother and grandmother loved to cook brussel sprouts. I would eat those first so that they wouldn't be the last taste in my mouth. Then, I could politely refuse seconds. And I survived. Another reason for eating whatever was on the plate was to earn dessert.

As an adult, I will eat whatever the host cooks. I may not particularly care for something but I will eat at least a small serving of it. I'm thankful for their generosity and effort. When I was 20, without a place to live, out of a job and waiting on one last paycheck, I went for 5 days and nights without food. I just had water out of the tap, and I absconded with a lime left in the fridge, staying at someone's apt who was about to be evicted for non-payment of rent. I have been without and I've seen a few rough times and it helps me to appreciate when someone cooks for me, even if it's not something I normally eat. I will eat it and be thankful for the bounty.

My wife doesn't like to eat the same thing twice in a row, usually. Whereas I could have pizza for lunch and then have pizza again for dinner. Our friend with the Great Pyr, will make deviled eggs when she knows we're coming over for dinner because I will nearly perform a running tackle to get at them. For Easter, she made a dozen and I made off with at least half. Of course, she specifically made them knowing I would like them.

That's what I'm saying Ron.....my kids had a choice too....eat it or go without, but nothing else is going in your mouth until the next sheduled meal time.  Now that said, I did TRY not to make something that I knew anyone hated.  My youngest son LOVED the dreaded brussel sprouts, the eldest HATED them....youngest son made me buy ONLY fresh BS because eldest didn't hate those AS much.  But heck, youngest son was considerate about it and I knew that he really, really liked them  NOW, I'd just fix TWO veggies.....as I do when DH and I want spinach.  So, I pretty much stuck with things that everyone liked, but, I didn't get up and make something else cuz somebody fussed.

If my kids dont want what i've cooked then they are more than welcome to cook something "healthy" for themselves(rarely happens),i know what it feels like to be forced to eat something you really do not want,as i was made to sit at the table when i was a kid until i had finished my plate, for hours if needed be,i will never inflict this weird overpowering way onto my kids!

I'm lucky in that none of my dogs are picky, nor do they have any allergies! I really do feel they appreciate variety just as we do,I wont feed them the same stuff every single day just cuz they are DOGS,i feed them a variety because i dont feel feeding the same or similar foods constantly is healthy and as they say "variety is the spice of life",i like to keep things interesting [;)]
