rotating food

Interesting, and since this is from a professor teaching animal nutrition it's probably more accurate than the source I referrenced. For mixing kibble and canned I always use the same brand of food for both because I thought they had the same nutrient profiles; am I wrong about that?

Yes, the canned food and the dry food of the same brand can have different nutrient profiles.  If you look at the ingredients, it is likely that the canned has a lot less grains, and a different calcium/phosphorus ratio.  Also, the protein content is different (usually higher) in the canned (even though it may say 9% protein, the DM content is much higher).  So technically even though you are feeding the same brand with similar products, they are of different composition.   But even with that said, there is no problem with doing so. [:)]

**Since I buy the 4 lbs bags, and it takes him a little less than a month to finish a bag, I rotate every 2 bags.

Just another reason to switch dog foods, at least why I do. I rotate between about four that work for my dogs. (always on the lookout for others!). I do this because besides the fact that I also think dogs like change in their diet, I think it keeps their gastrointestinal system functioning better. You know how people switch their dog's food and go for a week or two with their dog having severe diarrahea? Well, I never have that problem because I do switch. I also home cook. I think the digestive system needs variety, but that's just my opinion.

OK you asked for it!! [:D]  Billy, you don't love your dog enough, you're trying to kill him and you just aren't a very nice person.[sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif][sm=rofl.gif]

LMAO.  Well, if he chews up another one of the wife's rugs, he won't have to worry about ME killing him.  [:)

I dunno what it is with Odie and rugs.  He has chewed up maybe a half dozen of them in the year or so we have had him.  He never chews anything else he is not supposed to.  Maybe he has a rug fetish?

Hmmmm, probably objecting to the junk you feed him???  That or his mixed heritage?

I have been mixing two different brands of kibble for a while now.  I didn't think there would be anything wrong with it, but I think that I will try to keep it to just one and then rotate in the future.  Right now, our kibble is already mixed in a plastic container so to pick out the different kibbles would be insane, but I didn't notice anything abnormal about my puppy's stools, etc.  I honestly don't think he knows the difference.

Don't worry, it's ok to mix kibble if you want to.

Well I do believe I am at a loss! i-doggers having a peacefull discussion about dog food?????[:o]

I was looking for this sort of subject. Pippin has developed a tendancy to boredome with her food. She started chucking kibbles in my lap last week! She has been on Innova Evo for 2+ years and I think she is totally bored.[:'(] Merri on the other hand will eat anything that isn't nailed down.[:@]
So I went to the store and got something diferent. Natures variety has a new frozen food that is a raw food for lazy dog owners.[;)] So I got some of that pluss the NV kibble. Both dogs like it. Both the frozen and kibble but man they think the frozen is manna from heaven. Of course I do thaw it first. My cat, Callie, likes it too but not my other cat Precious who prefers the kibble.

I learned that NV is going to be offering vouchers for buy one get one free bags too and they have about 4 kinds in the frozen.

I also found out that Innova Evo is going to come out in diferent flavors so we will have more choices. [:)]

    Hi to all,

I feed raw, and I do rotate his protein almost daily.  He eats anything as long as it is not still moving when I serve it to him, hehehe. I think chances of becoming allergic to a certain source is when eaten all or almost all of the time. This is why he rarely gets the same thing in a row.  And when I don't have anything thawed out I rely on Innova or Merrick, but canned he just does not like the kibble.  Which is funny to me, because he is a rescue dog whom I have only had for the last two years and I wonder what this dog ate before.

I just looked up the NV you talked about it sounds like a great food also, I have never rotated there food before but am thinking really hard  about starting, i just want to make sure i'm doing it right.  You feed both the NV raw and dry right? Do you switch every day? Also they have 4 different types of dry plus a grain free dry.
Could I rotate between all of these plus innova, canidae and artemis and use the raw once or twice a week or is that too many.
Now I think if i use the NV I can rotate between them without worry of stomach upset but when I switch to a different  brand i would do it over a weeks time Right.?
and one more question. do you or anyone know if the dry pretty much the same as the raw. If no can you tell me why?

I just printed a coupon, thanks. I forgot to ask this on the post I just sent, My dogs have never had beef in there dry food before. should I rotate with a beef dry or stay away from it.

Gosh 3guysandagirl(do you have a name?),i need my glasses and a magnifying glass to read your tiny writing, could you perhaps move it up to the normal size? [:D]

I have noticed that the people who say "dogs need variety" is a myth are the ones who dont feed a variety and pretty much feed the same thing day in,day out. I am a firm believer in variety,my dogs get a different kibble everyday, they also get a different raw meal daily for their other meal.Right now i have 5 different kibbles on the go.Yes i do think they get bored,i judge this by how excited they get when they know they are about to get something they havnt had for ages, and eating the same food every single day isnt healthy for any living species IMHO.

Edie, perhaps you DO need glasses...I'm seeing her post the same size as yours.

PEOPLE need variety to satisfy THEIR need for various foods.  Dogs don't, not for that reason anyway.  And nope, I dont' change their kibble. Once I finally found Innova I never looked back.  However,  I do change up the protein source and veggies in their home cooked.
