I want to feed my Chihuahua with human grade food

I was just in Suwannee a couple of weeks ago picking up a rescue dog.  Small world, huh?

You can also find local fresh suppliers of things like rabbit and small poultry.  Prey model means she gets balanced nutrition over time by eating the equivalent of a whole animal - including head, feet, and feathers/fur (provides insoluble fiber, trace minerals, and biotin).  Here's the Georgia "market Bulletin" where you can find ads for poultry and rabbit and even goat and sheep providers.  [linkhttp://www.agr.state.ga.us/mbads/%C2%A0]http://www.agr.state.ga.us/mbads/ [/link] Some will offer them fresh frozen, whole if that's what you want, and the larger livestock producers should be able to deliver to a meat processor (my Chinese crested can eat small goat and sheep bones right up).

Also, you can get tips on local resources for raw food suppliers through an e-mail list for local raw feeders - here's one for Atlanta! [linkhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantabarf/]http://groups.yahoo.com/group/atlantabarf/[/link]

    Awesome post thanks :)

Also what are some good treats for training him that aren't terrible for him?

I use teeny bits of dehyrated liver - they are crazy expensive but for a three pound dog you won't want to give him more than a taste at a time.

Several of the premium dog food companies make treats that are suitable.  Look for treats that are soft and that you can break into microscopic pieces.  You can fill a dog up that small very easily!  My Zhi is about ten pounds, and I take a bit of Solid Gold lamb jerky about the size of my fingernail, and break it into about 12 to 20 crumbs.  I also feed her a little EVO for breakfast sometimes and when I do that I make her work for it one kibble at a time.

I think there's a recipe section on this website - there are some clever cooks here and you'll get more ideas, I'm sure!

Well my dog likes eating the raw stuff but he has like no energy at all today all he has done is slept. Is that normal? Even when I took him outside he didn't run around like usual. Do dogs get lazy on rainy days like today? I took him out right after it stopped raining and he was still lazy. He is usually pretty energetic. I also started him with confinement training so he stops crapping everywhere. I have him in a pretty big area compared to box training and it's worked so far today. He hasn't crapped in his area and when outside he went number one and two.

You gave him a whole turkey neck? He's probably just stuffed:)

I don't give turkey much because it has l-tryptophan in it, which is a mild sedative.  That's why you want to take a nap after you have a holiday dinner with turkey.  If he ate the whole neck that's a LOT of L-t! [:D]

It won't harm him at all, you just want to offer something a little less, er, soothing, next time. [;)]

I don't give german shepherds turkey necks.  The bones seem to be a LOT harder and there just isn't enough meat on the things.

I have bull mastiffs,i gave turkey necks ONCE,i never did again! They are too large, the bones are brittle and sharp and as glenmar mentioned they have hardly no meat on them.I cant imagine a tiny chi putting away a whole turkey neck, personally i would be worried how a little dog like that could handle a huge boney neck??Some of the turkey necks i've seen are as big as a chi [sm=eek.gif] [;)]
Chicken necks would be more the right size, they are small, the bones are soft and chewy, just the right size and texture for a chi [:)]

If he's still acting lethargic tomorrow you may want to have him checked out; I doubt if it was the tryptophan that is making him lethargic.

He is fine now and is running around. It must be that stuff. I will give him chicken stuff tomorrow just gotta go get some.

I'm happy that he's back to normal; I was worried about him being able to handle a turkey neck since he's a little guy.

My dad is being a major douche and is telling me to quit feeding him raw because it disturbs him and that humans don't eat raw. My dad is a f****** moron and won't even listen to me so is there some sort of official site that looks professional that proves I am right and he is being assanine?

Ummm... dogs aren't people? Even so, it's FINE for people to eat raw meat. It's the contamination that gets us. Factory farms are horrible places.

Exactly my point to him but he still flipped his shit. I doubt he will admit he is wrong even after reading all this though. :|

If I can't raw feed till I move out what would you recommend in the time in between? The dog is technically my dad's as I never asked for it but he is never home and I am the only one who cares for it. Thank God for his sake I am not a lazy bastard lol. I actually do research on stuff before I choose to do stuff. Anyways enought venting, what's a good backup option? I heard good things about Innova, thoughts? Also is Innova carried in Petsmart?
    • Gold Top Dog
No, they don't have Innova at Petsmart. There's a store locator on their site, at Naturapet.com

Well I just emailed him all the links so we will see what he says. If he still is being stupid I will get him Innova cans and bags for the next while with some ribs or something once a week or so.
