[linkhttp://www.itchmo.com/read/natural-balance-expands-recall-to-canned-foods_20070426]BREAKINGNEWS: Natural Balance Expands Recall to Canned Foods[/link]April 26th, 2007

[linkhttp://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/]Natural Balance recalls more products — this time canned.[/link] Same ingredient (rice protein concentrate) different manufacturer (American Nutrition). Products recalled are:
    • Chicken Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
    • Lamb Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
    • Beef Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
    • Ocean Fish Formula Canned Cat Food 3 oz & 6 oz

i may be blind but I went to their website and looked at the ingredients for those items and I do not see rice protein concentrate[&:]

They're claiming that American Nutrition added RPC w/o NB's knowledge.  From NB's website:

Our canned food manufacturer, American Nutrition, from Ogden Utah just informed us this afternoon that they are recalling all canned products made in their plant that contain rice protein concentrate. American Nutrition continued by telling us that they added this ingredient  to four of our canned food products without our knowledge and consent. The four products involved are:
Chicken Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Lamb Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Beef Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Ocean Fish Formula Canned Cat Food 3 oz & 6 oz

Why would any company add another ingredient that costs them money without telling the customer...The manufacturer isn't going to get any more money on the contract..if they dont inform the customer that it's costing them more to make..I smell BS

Possibly to replace an ingredient that costs more money?  Like meat?  I really don't know what to think...this has gotten completely out of hand.  This is the first recall of something that I actually do feed.

American Nutrition could've added the RPC to boost the protein content.  Then they'd be able to reduce the amount of meat protein and yet still maintain the same total level of protein.  Which would result in more profit for them (assuming RPC is a lot cheaper than meat protein).

I'm not defending either of them.  At this point I don't think we can trust any of them.  It was NB's job to know what was going on, so they don't get a pass from me.

You could be right..but then they would be in complete violation of a contract..pretty bad what ever the case may be

American Nutrition also manufactures Breeder's Choice canned and Diamond canned. So they just arbitrarily added it to Natural Balance canned only??? Or are those the next to be recalled? I guess we will have to wait and see.

    I agree with you..

They've always said that they have people on site supervising the manufacturing of all of there food, apparently that isn't the case.

One of the Diamond canned is being recalled  [&:]

I am wondering if there's an issue of some of these being made on the same assembly line as other ones they KNOW are contaminated or something.  All my illusions of trustworthy business practices are shot to heck, but I still find it hard to believe ALL these labels are fudging their formulas.  I found it odd that Costco is recalling a NINE month span of "best by" dates.  That doesn't say "we changed our formula on X date and oopsie" to me.  That says "heck if we know whats going on."  Another option is that American Nutrition was doctoring all the formulas without the brands knowing?  That would take some brass balls imo.

I think I am going to be switching to Canidae. This is the second time that NB has stated that there was an ingredient in their food that wasn't listed on the label.  To me, that is inexcusable.

"However, because American Nutrition informed the company that these three specific products may include rice protein concentrate, Diamond Pet Foods felt this action was necessary for the protection of its customers and their pets."

Maybe that's what's been going on.
