Homecookers: What's for dinner?

    • Gold Top Dog
1 teaspoon of ground eggshell per lb of food for calcium

I think that might be too much calcium? By my own calculation (based on eggshells being 95% calcium carbonate, which is 40% calcium, and an eggshell/1 tsp eggshell powder averaging 5 grams), 1 tsp eggshell has about 1900 mg calcium. Most meat has 600-800 mg phosphorus per pound, so really only 1/2 tsp is necessary. [:)]

Safeway had round steak on sale at a very good price AND they sliced it nice and thin for me. I still have to trim any fat off, but home made beef doggy jerky will be an appreciated treat.

    We do chicken jerky too.

I'm still wondering about the supplements. I already have fish oil because I take it myself. How much should a 4 lb dog take? I also have Vit. E oil. Is this a bad form to give him? If not, how much should he be given. I was also looking at the Solid Gold Seameal supplement to add as well.

Would it be too much to take with a multi vitamin as well?

LOL I just went CRAZY trying to figure out how many grams a teaspoon of eggshell weighs and couldn't find the answer !
But Lo, I believe you're right.   From now on I want to add it by weight so thanks for that.

This is a good brand for salmon oil http://www.grizzlypetproducts.com/

On the bottom of that page there is a link to dosage instructions.

This is what I normally feed my dog: raw ground beef/deer/turkey, brown rice, carrots, peas, raw egg, plain yogurt, garlic (minced in olive oil), bone meal, salmon oil and kelp-(just a pinch). Be sure to puree your veggies in a blender or food processor. Good luck!

I just bought beef liver and now I find that some dogs get the runs from it.  Just what I need!  Any beef liver recipe that won't cause the runs?

I h ave never had a problem with it and my goldens.  i use to cook daily for them, and would boil the chopped up liver with some veggies.  now i crock pot cook and put it in with my chicken and veggies.

Just use small amounts with other foods. Organ meats including liver, kidneys, etc. shouldn't be more than 10 percent of the diet. You can use heart as a muscle meat, but even then don't go over about 25 percent.

I will a give him small amount at a time, then.  I was beginning to wonder how to bring this yucky stuff back to the butcher.
    Thanks!

Stace do you have a recipe

All I do with either the steak or chicken is just slice it nice and thin, remove any fat, spray cookie sheets with PAM, and place in the oven on about 190 for about eight or nine hours. You can do it overnight while you sleep. If you are not sure of the tempetature accuracy of your oven check with a thermometer first. Otherwise, you can't burn the stuff. I use both racks of the oven.

I do keep it in the fridge just in case, but it doesn't last long.

Thank you I will give it a try

I've got a canine cook book.  The author/chef is from Europe, I think.  He has a section dedicated to breeds that specifies what's best and not-so-good depending upon the breed and it's origin.  Very interesting.  If anyone is interested in their particular breed, I'd be happy to look it up.  PM me.
