You know it's only a matter of time until it's detected in pet foods here.

Yikes,,,this is getting worse and worse!

This is telling us that several pets have died in South Africa on Corn Gluten. I did go to their website and the article is correct,,,Blue Buffalo is recalling certain kitty food.
The Rice Protein Concentrate is in several foods... wonder if they all get it from the same place.

If we are importing corn gluten from China there is something seriously wrong. We have that stuff coming out of our ears in this country. I can see South Africa importing it. They aren't a huge corn producer. But here we produce billions of bushels of corn AND manufacture the corn syrup and ethanol that results in tons of corn gluten meal as a co-product.

I figured it long ago--we are in the business of supporting most of the countries in the world while ours goes to hell on a hay wagon!

EDITED--like my brothers job went to Tiawan, his girl friends and is DIL to India, etc, etc.

Oh boy..... I think the only good thing to come of all of this is that A LOT of people are having a major eye opener about pet food. Not just the average pet owner that feeds Beneful without really understanding what's in it, but also for the rest of us about just how much manufacturer's DON'T know about the ingredients they're putting in food. I hope the regulations get much stricter after this!

Agreed. I read that the reason we import wheat gluten is that China's main source of starch is wheat, the gluten is a by-product and therefore cheap and plentiful. We don't use wheat fractions as much here. In the US our main source of starch is corn and we use tons of corn products, so we shouldn't have any reason to import corn gluten.

It not only has me wondering about dog food, but also human food.   Some of these companies say they use nothing bur human grade food--which means the same products could end up in human food.  THAT IS SCAREY.

I could understand how ONE batch of ONE product could POSSIBILY get contaminated (tho i would think it unlikely) but we are talking two different products here  Nobody can explian how it happened, seems very, very, very unlikely it was accidental.  Since these was suppose to be human grade products, is it possible the melamine was added with the idea of making humans sick?  i know i am clutching at straws, but the idea popped into my head.

DelMonte said the tainted wheat gluten they bought was labeled for human consumption.  Now that scares me hugely--it was bought by a human food company, who says it all went into pet food.  But how do we know??

I could understand how ONE batch of ONE product could POSSIBILY get contaminated (tho i would think it unlikely) but we are talking two different products here.

If you count the tainted corn gluten found in South Africa, it's three products.

At this point I think any rational person has to realize this isn't accidental.  Hopefully that means somebody high up in D.C. will "get it" (in addition to Senator Durbin).

This is interesting..now we know what happens to tainted food

During a conference call today, the FDA confirmed that melamine-tainted pet food was reprocessed and fed to hogs. People eat hogs. Figure it out for yourself.

That might be because South Africa cannot grow it's own corn.  And, again, the Royal Canin sold in the US is not the same Royal Canin sold in other countries.  They have different ingredients completely.  I really hope that American pet foods are not buying imported corn.  That's just stupid.  Then again, we bought imported wheat.  There's a wheat field less than a mile away from me.

Breaking, breaking news... A top holistic brand, Natural Balance, just voluntarily recalled four products and confirmed that they found melamine in a US-supplied rice gluten. I'm guessing corn, wheat, and rice gluten providers have long known a "dirty industry secret" of making protein content apper higher and just finally got caught.
