Ash and adding water

Well I tried out something new today . . . . I gave Winston 1c. of California Natural Puppy Lamb & Rice Dry (which he is doing great on BTW!), 2 tbsp. of Innova Puppy Canned (which I seriously hope is not affected by the recall . . . I don't see wheat gluten on the label, and Natura's website repeatedly claims that none of their products are affected.  I hope they are right!), and I added enough tepid water to turn the canned food to gravy.

Winston LOVED it!  I've never seen him so excited about food before (this was also his first taste of canned food)

how much water are we talking here?

Well, I'm a nutjob, but if I give a cup of kibble, I add a cup of water. I figure that makes it about 70% moisture by weight, which is about what most fresh foods are. But I generally feed homecooked, and I add water to that til it looks like soup.

Wow, I had no idea people added that much water. I always assumed it was like a tablespoon or two. I'm picturing Cherokee bobbing for kibbles. [:D]

I have never measured the amount of water, but it is enough for it to look kinda soupy...I like chunks of meat & veggies in my soup,  so i make their food look like that with their chicken stew added, or fish & veggies.  I have never done it to get them drink water as all are great water drinkers...all my dogs have been.   It just seems like the right to feed them to me.

Rick's very food motivated but doesn't drink that much water.[sm=sad.gif]

I found that if I add A LOT of water to his food (enough so that the food is floating)
he will drink it because it's the only way he can get to his food [;)]

I add water because it makes it easier to stuff Kongs and freeze them. I wait for the kibble to absorb the water (sometimes helped by a short journey to the microwave) and then stuff and freeze. About 1/4 c. water per cup of food, so apparently I'm at the lower end of that spectrum.

My guys are great water drinkers though. My kitchen floor often has the consistency of a swamp to prove it.

i guess i'm at the extreme bottom of the spectrum because i neither add water nor feed ANY canned food to my dogs.  i am interested in the subject of bloat, though, so maybe i'll start....

why is adding water not recommeded on the feeding directions?  like how is the layman (read not idogger) supposed to learn these things?  and my dogs like the crunch of the kibble, so i'm not sure about watering it down.

When I fed kibble, I used to add about 1/2 cup of water per cup of food.  That forced Beauty to drink the water before she could eat.  If you feed it right away the dry food is still crunchy.

If you are adding that much water...why not just throw it all in a blender and make a paste pate' out of it? Probably easier for the dog and might make the whole thing taste better if the dogs not thrilled about the water.

I make puppy gruel that way...cept using formula instead of water at first.

think the myth of chewing the kibble cleaning teeth has been debunked so you'd really not be losing much aside from the time. But you could always blend a bunch and freeze it.

Hehe. She really doesn't mind. She laps it all up together. *Slurp slurp, crunch crunch* Her homecooked is always really soupy too. She's used to it. [:)]
