Wheat Glutton

Also the tricky thing is that most manufacturers do test there products before and after manufacturing, but they can't test for everything, they will test for things that are most likely to occur like salmonella or things of that nature, but of course they don't test for rat poison, or melamine or things like that and since you can't test for everything, that makes this is a pretty tricky situation, you have to really trust your suppliers.

But, some people still feel more comfortable not using any product that Menu is involved in right now.  Personally, I can see their point.  And, I'm pretty uneasy right now about giving Willow the prescription cans--no wheat gluten--but I'm pretty sure they are done at Menu.  But, at the same time I'm not going to start running around homecooking and causing her to have flare up's and changing our whole routine.  If I hear good reason to I will but at this point it's not necessary.

Yes Lori, I agree. I use Eagle Pack kibble and quite happy that I feel its totally safe..they use no wheat gluten in any of their products including canned WHICH ARE produced by Menu. BUT I will NOT use even their canned products at this point because I'm afraid.  Actully since Bubby doesn't eat canned anyway, I just won't buy ANY canned right now, I usually have a can or two around incase I didn't have time to cook meat.
However Bob keeps talking grocery store garbage and Menu and its not right. Menu makes a heck of a lot more brands then what he calls grocery store garbage!  They make many premium brands...it just the wheat gluten is not in them for whatever reason - it doesn't matter. The point is, Menu makes 90 - 95 % of wet pet food. THATS a lot and its not all grocery store garbage as Bob calls it.

You're right Dyan.  And, I don't blame you.  If it wasn't that these particular cans I'm using are prescription I wouldn't buy anything from them right now either.  But, I can't just use anything so I'm stuck.

I personally would not feel comfortable using anything from Menu either,  I sometimes wonder though if after something like this happens if it is not better to use a company that just had something like this happen, I wonder if they may be more diligent, of course that is if they are still in business, it seems like prior to this Menu had an impeccable reputation, everyone from Pet's Pride to Science Diet to Natura had nothing but good things to say about them.

I agree Abbysdad.  I felt that right after the Diamond recall that they were probably the safest company to purchase pet food from EVER.    And Menu did have a great reputation,,best of anyone from what I read.
HOWEVER...right now the way they keep adding companies to the recall list, I'm afraid to buy Eagle kibble!  THATS neurotic....but I am. I bought a bag of Eagle Tues and told DH do NOT open this bag until completely 100% necessary!  Almost as though I think in a few days someone is going to tell me that Eagle kibble is being recalled.
Right now, I won't feed Bubby anything with wheat. Thank goodness Eagle doesn't use it.   Snack either... NO WHEAT PERIOD! So she says while eating a piece of bread with wheat flour. lol!

That was like with the peanut butter recall I couldn't eat any brand for awhile.

Call me super paronoid, but I looked at my bread that had wheat gluten in it, and threw it out.  I really don't like "normal" bread anyway and just bought some as a change.  Brought out and cooked the frozen artisan bread from sams club instead.

    OK:   My Menu story.

Last October I started an elimination diet and was using Wysong rabbit as the meat (Wysong being a very good name and has quite an interesting website).  Well, early on (and in later cans as well) I noticed these strange splotchy rasberry colored pieces in the food.  I called and querried them about it b/c it did not look like blood or blood vessels or anything of that nature.  It had such a pacurliar color - bright raspberry.  Well, they are supposed to put the meat in the can and cook the meat inside the can.  Anyway, I told them what batch it was and they said they would have a tech or somebody check it out and get back at me.   NOT.

Then, I started having lots of problems with the cans being dented.  Many that I would never buy at the grocery story.

Then, I started noticing how there was ALOT of air space in a good number of the cans.  There will be air space, of course.  As the meat is cooked, it is going to shrink and not fill up the space.  But, in my opinion, alot of the cans had so much air space that after opening, I was uncomfortable using them.  Then, other cans would be what I considered normal.   Now, I completely realize this is subjective.  But, my point is that all this added up to my stopping use of this product 2 weeks before all this mess started.   I did not know that Menu made the food until the lists came out.  But, it was not up to my standards for the food I was getting before I knew they had problems.  So, I'm not crazy about their manufacturing processes - and that is another subject than the ingredient listing, but one I'm just mentioning as a personal experience.

I don't know if I would call you super paronoid, last I heard the FDA has not been able to say whether this contamination has entered the human food chain, best they have been able to say is there are no indications it has.

Exactly - the manufacturing equipment isn't the problem - it's the ingredient. And both NB and Natura are very strict about what ingredients they use.

The bottom line is you have to have faith and believe in the companies that you do business with, if you feel comfortable with those companies and you get results that you are happy with, then great, of course you are taking there word that they are strict about the ingredients that they use, since I assume you have not done any independent testing of them.  That is not any different than anyone who has faith in any other dog food or company. They have reasons for having faith in those products and companies, and there reasons are just as good as anybody elses.  There are no right or wrong answer.

dyan..I would not call it neurotic..I feel the same way about the Innova kibble...I think a LOT of people feel the same way you do...whats next..
