Eagle Pack and recall

    I'm sorry, but I just read through that article laughing. Whoever thinks dogs have done much evolving (adapting is obviously a different story) in as little as 14,000 years obviously doesn't understand evolution at all. 14,000 years is practically nothing when it comes to evolution. 100,000 years doesn't even see huge changes.

    Potatoes are absolutlely a complex carb.  The simple carbs responsible for high blood suger are found in processed and fractioned grains.  Don't confuse grain-free with carb-free.   Grain-free is an attempt to replace grains (particularly glutenous grains) with another carb source to avoid allergic responses.  It does not remove carbohydrates.  Even this is a suspect idea because allergies are caused by protein responses, so a dog could just as easily have a response to any protein source.  Plus the fact that allergies are usually caused by prolonged exposure to the same protein, and you can quickly run sources.  That's why it's debated whether to put dogs on allergy type diets if they don't have allergies.  It probably also explains why there are a lot of fish and potato diets as they seem to have replaced lamb and rice as the allergy diet of choice.  I think Eagle Pack is saying if you take allergic response out of the equation, there's nothing wrong with grains in food as long as they are used as a carb source and you use whole, quality grains.

    Natural selection and UN-natural selection are very different things. And yes, natural selection can occur very quickly. I suggest you do some reading on the Cichlids of lake Tanganyika before and after the indroduction of sport fish if you don't believe me. Speciation can literally occur before your eyes if you have the right conditions...

    Very true.  If a change in environment causes an advantage or detriment to members of a species, particularly if its effects are realized before reproductive maturity is reached, you will see a very fast selection towards the advantage or away from the detriment.  In the case of domestic dogs, the abilty to adjust to a more omnivorous diet provided by humans would be a significant advantage to those members of the species.

    I'll buy "adapted" and actually I think that is a better word and thanks.

    We have had many calls and emails from pet owners seeking reassurance, which we are pleased to give. We don't sell the type of product being recalled nor do we use the ingredient in question.  We would be happy to answer any further questions that anyone might have.

    And this from the website: All Eagle Pack dry products are made in our own plants. Our canned foods are NOT involved in the Menu Foods recall.

    But he never said they don't use Menu? And 'the ingredient in question' hasn't been indentified - just speculated...

       They do use Menu; I e-mailed John yesterday asking if Menu Foods makes their canned food and this was the reply;

    [blockquote]

    We make all our dry products here. The recalled products are low end cuts and gravy and we are not involved in therecall. We do not make or sell this type of product. We make a high end loaf type food made by Menu to our specifications but it does not include the ingredients in the recalled product. We are currently feeding our product to
    our own cats dogs and there have been no issues.
     Thanks for asking, John

    I'm beginning to wonder if there's anyone who doesn't use Menu.[/blockquote]

    Right,,,that is probably why he didn't name it!

    I believe I read that Menu makes 90% of wet food. So not totally surprised that they make it for Eagle. Was reading a long article on another website about the low end - high end food made at that plant.  Also read it is one of the most trusted and respected companies.  Makes you wonder what happened....and also who are the few companies that don't use Menu?

    I would assume that Timberwolf is unaffected, but they only sell one type/kind of canned food.

    And it IS only canned food, right?

    ............................................................for now!   YIKES! Makes me wonder!

    Thanks Cazzy,,,thats a good list to have.  I don't feed Bubblegum canned food..but I do buy a can or two to have on hand in case I didn't have time to cook some meat and veggies to add on top of her kibble.  I think at this point in the game, I will just make sure I always have cooked meat though.
    I just keep thinking though,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,where will the tainted ingredient show up next???? WHAT EVER it is!

    Cazzy, thanks for the link. I can't use Eagle canned food anymore because of her allergy to potatoes, but I do use Nature's Variety canned food. From the link;

    These are brands that are produced in whole or in part by Menu Foods but for which we have spoken to the manufacturer and been assured that:
    • Their  ;products are not produced in the suspected plants.
    • None of their products are being recalled
    • They have had no reports of sick, dying, or dead pets.
    • Their products do not contain wheat gluten.

    We are selling these brands only if a client is fully aware of the recall and the potential risk posed by feeding a product made by Menu Foods. Although we have been assured that there is no problem with these foods, we cannot and do not vouch that they are safe.
    • The brands included are: Nature's Variety, Wellness, Castor & Pollux, Newman#%92s Own Organics, Wysong, Innova

  • Eagle Pack is not on this list?  I would think that it would be since John said the "they don't use the ingredient in question in any of their food."   Which I assume to me wheat gluten.

      The list is brands that they sell; they probably don't sell Eagle.
