    Fish kibble cause UTI???

I thought recently I saw a topic that was discussing UTI's and it mentioned that fish kibbles could aggravate the problem.  I've searched but cannot find it.

Can anyone help me out in finding it or please let me know if this is true.

I "thought" that Wellness was the issue with Willow's UTI's.  But, oddly enough, she's got another one and she's on another fish kibble.

    Thanks.[:)]

    Which brand are you using?
I have fed eagle pack fish formual, and timberwolf ocean blue to Darci my UTI prone pupper, and havent had any more problems.
I did change to bottled water, and started giving cranberry daily.
I am also adding water to their dry kibble.

Both EP and TWO have very low ash contents.

Can you try to increase her water intake? Either with a fountain water dish or adding water or canned food to her diet?

You know, I didn't think it was causing a problem, when we were using fish kibble (the same one you're using, actually). Now that I think about it, Emma did have a lot more UTIs on it. It could be because she was eating dry food, and getting a little dehydrated, or it could have been the fish every day. She still eats fish regularly, but not every day. She doesn't eat anything every day, any more.

I know with cats the excess of Magnesium levels in fish-based foods can be an issue in aggrivating or causing UTI issues....I suppose it could go the same for dogs as well.

Here's some additional info.  It's Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish.  What amount of ash should I look for in a food.

She only gets kibble once a day and it's always with Evanger's canned and we have a Everpure water filter on our tap water.  Her other meal(s) are always canned with Evanger's or homecooked add-ins.  So, she really doesn't get much kibble.  But, she really likes the NB Fish so she has been eating it pretty much daily.  She's on maybe bag number 5 or so.  A 5lb bag lasts her about 3 weeks to a month.

So, if anyone knows what amount of ash I'm supposed to be looking for I will try to find something else or call NB and see what the deal is with the one she's on.

I need a "allergy" type food because she also has irritable bowel.  So, it can't have a lot of ingredients.

Thanks for any help.  I know lots of people are having this issue lately.

Lori, as I was told by Papillion on here: No higher than an 8% ash content. Not many food companies put their ash content on their bags of food.

But, as it was explained to me, ash content shouldn't matter if you add water to the kibble.

Really?  I do add water but something is still not right.  I don't know if I should switch kibble or what?  I hate having to see the vet for these UTI's so often.

Would it upset Willow's IBS issues if you gave her a cranberry supplement?

    Or just some cranberries?

I add cranberries or blueberries to my dogs' food every week. Both fruits contain d-mannose, which is great for the urinary tract. This week, they're getting mushed blueberries and goat yogurt for their lunch. They're beyond thrilled about that!

Trudy has eaten Nat. Balance fish for several years. She has never had a UTI. I guess each dog is different. I am sorry Willow is having these. I get UTI's sometimes. I hate them.

Yeah, Willow's really prone to them Sally.  She's had them before.  But, recently she's been doing well until yesterday.

I could try adding a cranberry supplement.  There would be a definate protest if I tried to feed her fruit--the princess[8|]

How is Solid Gold's Berry Balance?  Or what would you suggests as far  as brand and what to get--a powder would be preferable so I can mix with food.

I'm not a vitamin girl, I have a hard time remembering my Viactiv every day and those taste GOOD, LOL!

I'd try the Berry Balance. Either that, or I'd get some D-Mannose, by NOW, and give her a small (probably 1/4-1/2 teaspoon) dose every day. Those are the two powdered things I can think of. Mine like cranberry pills, and eat them readily, and also eat the fruit happily[;)] They're pigs.

Another thought is cranberry Emergen-C. I try to drink a packet of that every day. It has 1000 mg of cranberry, 1000 mg of vitamin c, and some b vitamins. The vit c helps acidify the urine, and keep the bacteria out. If she'll eat it, you could mix that with her food.

Rice Flour | Cranberry Extract | Ascorbic Acid | Blueberry Extract | Marshmallow | Silica Gel | Natural Flavoring |

These are the ingredients in Berry Balance.  Do they all check out OK as far as being good for her?  I'm seeing marshmallow and I'm thinking sugar??  Is that right?
