For those who order food online...

Where do you order it from? I've looked, but I just cannot justify the cost to ship it. For example, I would have to drive over an hour from here to get Canidae. I can actually drive there for cheaper then it costs to ship it to me. Is there any place that you order from who does not charge much for shipping? Or one you can get a good discount from?

Where do you live? I found a place that ships Natura products (HealthWwise, Innova & California Natural) for free to Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa. Their prices are about the same as if I drove the one hour round-trip and paid 7% tax to buy locally. [linkhttp://www.qualitypet.net/]Quality Pet[/link]

I had found another place that shipped Canidae for free in my area, but they were pretty pricey and now I can't find the site again. I'll try looking some more.

Timberwolf Organics has free shipping and 10% off for orders over $100.  Very good food as well, IMHO.

www.petfooddirect.com carries just about every food, and if you get on their e-mail list (fill out the free food for a year form and use an e-mail you don't mind getting spam on) they send 20% off coupons about once a month and 22% off occasionally. Their shipping is pretty slow and I have received some well-packed stuff from them and some stuff that might as well have been shipped without packaging.

I have also used www.onlynaturalpet.com in the past. They have fast shipping and good service but they REALLY irritated me. I used my home as the billing address on an order but had it shipped to my office. Ever since then I have been receiving a TON of animal-related junk mail from all kinds of places at the office. It's incredibly annoying and I'm beginning to think impossible to stop. I never had that problem with any other company shipping stuff to an office. They always used the billing address for catalogs and whatnot and to sell to other companies.

Seriously. I ordered some stuff from them on the 7th, and it just came yesterday. In the meantime, I had to go buy food for Cherokee, because while I thought I had plenty to get through til the PFD order came, it took waaaay too long. [:@]

I drive an hour once a month for dog and cat food.
I say if you buy a months worth, its not so bad.

I have ordered many times from petfooddirect the worse thing is the time it takes to get here.
    Sometimes up to 14 days.

I have another suggestion.  If you have a store near you that sells dog foods, but not the one you want, you still may be able to get them to order the one you want and stock it in the store.  I have done that with the timberwolf organics as well as the eagle pack holistic, and canidae.  I love these foods, but couldnt justify the shipping.  They were really happy to order and they have become their best sellers to boot[:)]

Depending on the kind of food you want www.jbpet.com doesnt charge extra shipping for overweight items.

I've been very interested in their foods, but gosh are they expensive! Plus, I feel kind of overwhelmed by the different choices. Which choices would most of you suggest? And is there any specific reason why they are more expensive (other than they use better ingredients)? Do you feed THAT much less that it comes out better?

EDIT:    Holy cow!! I just did a dealer search and there is a place that carries Timberwolf Organics less then 20 miles from where I live! I think I might have just found my solution. I'll have to give them a call tomorrow and see what they sell. I also bumped an older thread of mine because it concerns the reason I'm considering switching. Thanks.

When making online comparisons, you really need to look at your total cost.  Ultimately, there is no such thing as "free" shipping.  There might not be a line item for shipping on your invoice, but the vendor has to recover that cost somehow, some way.  Vendors that don't charge for shipping usually have a higher product cost.

I order Timberwolf Organics directly from them.  Yeah, it is "expensive," but a bag will last Odie over a month.  As someone else mentioned, they do have "free" shipping but I take that with a grain of salt.

Their food is very calorie dense (particularly the Wild and Natural), so when you break it down as cost per cup it comes out the same as other quality foods.

When you order directly from Timberwolf they get to cut out the distributer and retailer and keep those levels of markup.  They can afford to pay shipping and give you a discount off the full retail price (with a certain order size).  It is not the same as ordering from an online retailer/reseller.

I have to agree with Billy and Dakota's suggestion to order online through Timberwolf directly. I do have 2 stores locally that carry it (although neither is convienent to go to). But I save SO much more money through buying direct through Timberwolf. The bags are cheaper to begin with than what they charge locally ;PLUS I don't pay sales tax when I order online AND I order $100 or more at a time so I get the 10% discount they usually offer. My pups go through two 33 pound bags in a month or so. I put in 1 order a month and it is delivered within a week and I don't pay any shipping.

I pay $49 a bag for the bison online versus $62 with tax locally AND I didn't waste my time or gas by having to drive there.. I think this is the best solution for you if you are considering this food...

When I could buy TWO locally, it was actually cheaper than buying it online.  If I were a TWO retailer, it would piss me off if my customer could buy directly from the manufacturer cheaper than I could sell it to them.  I believe a manufacturer has a responsibility to protect their retailers.
