You can buy diatomaecious earth in regular stores with swimming pool supplies.

No, you don't want to use the DE which is found with swimming pool supplies.  You need to buy food grade DE for use in pest control.  It is different than the DE used in swimming pool filters, which is heat treated and can cause respiratory problems in animals and humans.

Update, I switched their foods over to IVD Royal Venison/Potatoes per "Dogtor J" due to the Chocolate having seizures and the yellow having allergies - not my first choice in food, but it seems to be working.   I like Canidae's and once we get everything under control and healed, may switch back.    Since going all Natural I see that alot of you use supplements, my babies are 6 1/2 & 12 years old and suggestion??

I took 12 year old (Sunnie) to the vet and they wanted to give her a shot for her allergies, itching. hot spots, but I elected to try home remendies first.    I tried a new shampoo today Groomers Secret, her coat looks great!   I'm applying epsom salts/water mixture 3 times a day on the hot spots to dry out.   And instead of applying Advantage I'm trying the suggestion of the lemon spritz.

CITRUS REPELLENT: Cut a lemon into quarters and place in a pint jug.  Cover the lemon with boiling water and let it steep overnight.
Next day you have a flea repellent that you can use in a spray bottle.  Spray over your dog remembering especially behind the ears.

I am having to give her Cephalexin for the (3) hot spots that's she's licked and caused a small infection and Hydroxyzine for the itching instead of Benadryl.   I feel good about this vs giving her a steriod and Advantage, what do you guys think, input appreciated.

I noticed that ever since my dogs have been on holistic foods we have absolutely no problems with fleas at all. Just as a precaution though I do use an all natural herbal once-a-month flea remedy that's custom made by a master herbalist.. My dogs and cat's haven't seen a flea yet. Better yet, it's VERY economical.  I paid $30 for 24 doses so that lasts me 4 months for 6 pets. You sure can't beat that.  You can purchase them here : www.circleofstones.net     They also have a flea dip and flea spray available and will custom make anything you want ( shampoos, sprays, soaps, etc ) for a one time $2 fee.

I think a rusty color indicates a yeast infection, doesn't it? I'm not sure though, someone will come along with the answer.

This is slightly off topic, but I recommend that people keep a notebook for each pet specifically for what foods you feed (start date to end date) and how the dogs did on that food.  I ahve a record of my guys since I got them as pups, and I periodically review my comments.  I usually forget why I didn't like a food, but it's all right there in my notebook.

    Re the orange feet...

One of my bichons was a foot and leg chewer. She woudl be playing or sleeping and jolt up to chew her feet and legs. She was miserable. Eventually the vet did a microscope check of a scrape of her feet and it was yeast.  A month of ketoconazole cleared it up completely and we've had no problems since.  Keto can be a bit of a harsh drug, but we had tried food trials and shampoos but to no avail.

    Good luck

DE is non toxic and it will kill any crawling critter that passes thru it, it is so fine that it dessicates the animal from the inside out.  It works every where your yard, house, and if you get food grade can feed to your animal and will help from the inside out, I wish I can get some in Houston, if you brush it in your animal's coat it kills all sorts of parasites.
