Beneful Problems

    • Gold Top Dog
Thank you so much urban Beagles.  I have been told here so many times that I "just think" my dogs look good, I "just think" my dogs are healthy.  And then some say they look good because of the home cooking i give them (about 1/4 to 1/3 home cooking, the rest kibble.  The pictures of my irish setter and my Dad's dogs was purina Dog chow only.  The one of Hunter--pruina and some fish, but not regular as i was already slowing up on my fishing.    Buck and Honey--home cooking and canned fish, but their coats are no better than the ones that was just on the dog chow.

I look at pictures of dogs here on premium and their coats look no better to me than my dogs.  Of course you can't smell or feel my dogs coats, but surely you can tell from the pictures how soft they are, and folks will just have to take my word for it when i say my dogs do not stink.  now the cocker mix next door does look awful and does stink, but i think the biggest problems there is the dog is allergic to fleas and she thinks putting moth balls around takes care of fleas.  That dog does nothing sit sit and sctatch, sit and chew and everyonebut her--including her kids who says about all the fleas--sees them.  She has chewed raw spots all on her back.  is sad.

I have only one thought on nutrition and the feeding of pets.   If it ain't broke don't fix it.  Just because one food works for some doesn't make it right for all.  The going back and forth drives me insane [8|]  Some one will never convince me I feed junk.  My dogs are of good weight, healthy skin and coats, no problems with digestion.  I use Nutro and I am very happy with it but I know others think I am feeding a poor food.  OK back to other threads [:D]

I know I'm being really argumentative, but I just can't help it.

    Dog Chow:

Ground yellow corn, poultry by-product meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), corn gluten meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, animal digest, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Yellow 6), vitamins & minerals.

    Purina One Senior:

Chicken (natural source of glucosamine), brewers rice, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal (natural source of glucosamine), whole grain corn, oat meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), whole grain wheat, corn bran, fish meal, non-fat yogurt, pea fiber, animal digest, vitamins & minerals.

    Or how about..

    Fit & Trim:

Ground yellow corn, ground whole wheat, soybean meal, corn germ meal, soybean hulls, corn gluten meal, turkey by-product meal, chicken by-product meal, meat and bone meal, animal digest, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), calcium carbonate, salt, added color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2),  brewers dried yeast, vitamins & minerals

    Purina One Weight Management:

Turkey (natural source of glucosamine), brewers rice, poultry by-product meal (natural source of glucosamine), corn gluten meal, corn bran, whole grain corn, whole grain wheat, oat meal, non-fat yogurt, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), animal digest, vitamins & minerals.

You don't see a HUGE difference there?

Sounds like if you had a chicken farm and ran out of feed, the Purina products would make a good substitute.[;)

I am seeing pretty much the same ingreidents , maybe a little different order.

Wow, I see some big differences. In the Fit n Trim, the first SIX ingredients are grains! The fact that the meat is in meal form doesn't make up for the fact that it isn't there until the seventh ingredient. [&:] There are lots of ingredients that I don't like in both foods, but the second one is far worse. The only form of meat at all is by-products and "meat" meal. I don't have a problem with organs as part of the diet, but I really don't think it should be the bulk of the diet. Plus "meat" meal, who knows where that came from. And then the added color. It's obviously not there to benefit the dog in any way and it can't be healthy.

It's really simple to figure out why so much grain.  Grain is cheap, meat is expensive by comparison...Cheap ingredients mean more profit....

It may  mean more profit for Purina, but in my case it also means very healthy, active dogs with beautiful coats, not the oily, greasy, dry ones described by so many.  you can see for yourself by looking at the pictures of several of my dogs that i posted.  I personally don't care if purina makes a lot of profit or just ekes by so long as they make a food that my dogs do great on.

    I don't blame you Sandra!
