    Small Breed Dog Food??

What is the difference between regular adult dog food and dog food designed specifically for small breeds?
I've got my little dog on regular food and am wondering if there is any benefit to feeding a small breed food.

petsmart has some decent info explaining it:

Despite their smaller stature, small sized dogs are often the first to speak and the last to back down. They tend to rely on their wit and clever nature to make up for their small physical state.Small Dogs Aren't Just "Smaller"As you might expect, small dogs differ from larger dog breeds in more ways than reduced size.Consider that per pound of body weight, small dogs require higher levels of energy in their diet, while having a much smaller stomach size. In addition, on average small dogs live longer (up to twice as long) as some larger dog breeds. This longer lifespan means small dogs have a higher risk for experiencing some health conditions that may be associated with advanced age, including: teeth and gum disease, heart conditions, skin conditions, and ear and eye disorders. Lastly, small breed dogs have a smaller mouth and tend to be picky eaters.Small Dog NutritionGiven the small dog characteristics described above, nutrition for small sized dogs should go far beyond a smaller kibble. Their physical health differences are best nutritionally supported by food fully designed for small breed dogs. Key attributes of small breed food are:Energy LevelsSpecifically, small breed food should be more concentrated with higher protein and fat levels, sourced from ingredients such as chicken, fish, and egg. These high-quality protein sources provide key amino acids that work to help keep your dog's vital organs healthy.Dental BenefitsIt's also important to look for dental benefits since small dogs are likely to experience oral health problems. Specially formulated premium nutrition can help reduce tartar buildup, thereby improving overall oral health. This will also help maintain your dog's fresh breath.Immune SupportAs they age, additional stress is put on the dog's immune system. Since small dog breeds typically have a longer lifespan, strong immune support is particularly critical for these dogs. Antioxidants including vitamin E are key nutrients to help keep a small breed's immune system healthy. Also look for beta-carotene, an antioxidant that can help rejuvenate an older dog's immune system-particularly appropriate given a small dog's longer lifespan.TasteIn terms of palatability, first look for a diet with concentrated nutrition from high levels of animal-based fat and protein, which tends to improve flavor. Also look for a reduced-size kibble, which can help to promote the overall eating experience.A complete and balanced food specifically designed for a small dogs will help ensure your small dog is always at his or her best.

    Authority Chicken Minichunks

    Mini Adult Royal Canin

I thought the Authority was just that, mini chunks, but not actually a "small breed formula", am I wrong?  I hope so because I do like Authority.

My super picky small dog loves the Royal Canin "mini beauty." It's not a super primo food, but it's not bad, and it's the one kibble I've found so far that he actually enjoys. (It's very fragrant.) It has 26% protein, 17% fat, 3.6% fiber. Main ingredients: chicken, rice, brown rice, chicken meal, chicken fat.

A site that really helped me pick a food for my dog: [linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/]http://www.dogfoodproject.com[/link]

I use Eagle Pack small/med breed puppy and have had great results. The kibble is smaller size too.

Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit is a good one designed for small dogs. There are other foods with the same protein and fat levels that just aren't marketed for small dogs- like Nature's Variety and some of the Timberwolf Organics formulas.

I've had luck with the Royal Canin mini varieties.  I think it would be a great food to try [:D]

I have a peke/pom that is always starving.....I was thinking that the small breed foods might be better. I'll try Royal Canin...it's at my local store

I checked on the Authority and they do not a small breed dog food.  It is just smaller pieces of the regular adult formula.  After taking a look at small breed formulas, they appear to be the same thing as puppy food, both containing higher fat, protien, and calorie content.

Royal Canin Mini is a great food for the little guys.  Little guys are fussier because dogs decide if a food is yummy with their noses.  Small breeds have smaller noses, so Royal Canin coats their kibble in chicken liver to get the little guys to eat it better.  It also contains more protien for the little guys.

Eagle Pack Chicken Holistic is another small breed favorite and contains everything a small breed needs.

sorry, I wasn't on this thread for a while!

The Authority mini chunks have different ingredients from the normal, and even tho it doesn't say for small dogs, they recommend it for small to medium dogs.

Are you sure?  Because I looked at that dog food project site and it has them both listed under the same formula.  I'll double check next time I'm at petsmart.

I was at petsmart earlier today and there was eukanuba rep there and she showed me some small breed eukanuba dog food that looked pretty good.
