    royal canin: good or bad?

ok, so when i got my dogs the old owner gave me a bag of royal canin. that's what i have been feeding them ever since. of course a few months ago i switched to the adult version.

what do you think of the brand? is it any good?

i'm not having problems. just asking a general question...

It's not a bad food, but you can get better for about the same price.  Natural Balance is a bit cheaper and higher quality.  Sensible Choice is made by Royal Canin but is a little cheaper as well.  I think it is higher quality too.  But, remember, feed what works for your dog.

    thanx [:)]

if there is better food out there that's even cheaper, then i could at least try it..

but of course i'd have to check, if they have these brands here.

thanks for the quick feedback. :)

In general it#%92s a really good food, but it is a little expensive. There are formulas I don#%92t like, like the ones that don't have meat as the first ingredient and the ones with corn gluten meal in the main ingredients (before the fat), but most of them are good and I#%92ve heard of great results with it. Exactly which one are you feeding?

I feed Sensible Choice Lamb & Rice and am thrilled with it. It#%92s $36.99 for 40 lbs, so a little cheaper than the other Royal Canin products I think.

umm, good question, which one am i feeding.
    wait, lemme check. lol.

ok. umm, the label is mostly french, so.... it's the one for adult minis
    i pay 300 RMB for an 8 kg bag. that's about 37 $US

Oh, I didn't even look at where you are, sorry. In a lot of cases Royal Canin is one of the best foods available in Europe/Asia. Your ingredients may not be quite the same as what we're used to though.
    • Gold Top Dog
yes, i figured. i was just afraid that i might be feeding them awefully bad quality food, so... lol
anyways, it seems imported, so i don't worry too much about the whole "chinese quality" thing. (yes, it sounds bad, but it's true in 98% of the cases of ANY product...)

and i do know there are other imported brands available, so...

    ps: your dogs are BEAUTIFUL!!

I'm not really a fan of their food because of the corn gluten meal and wheat that are in most of their formulas. They're both common allergens.

To be fair, most of their formulas don't contain wheat. Only 4 of the 28 do. There are also 6 that don't contain corn.

It depends which country is importing it in.If it's from France then not so good, from the US,a little better.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ingredients taken from The UK RC site, imported from France:

    "Mini Adult"

    maize,maize flour,dehydrated poultry meat,animal fats,maize gluten,poultry liver,beet pulp,yeast,vegetable oil,fish oil,minerals,trace elements,sodium polyphosphate,DL-methionine,egg powder,L-lysine,L-carnitine,vitamins.
    Protein 27%
    Fat 16%
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ingredients for "mini adult" taken from US RC site:

Chicken, brewers rice, chicken meal, brown rice, corn gluten meal, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), oatmeal, beet pulp (sugar removed), natural chicken flavor, rice hulls, brewers yeast, salmon oil, canola oil, potassium chloride, salt, calcium carbonate, dried sweet potato, DL methionine, ascorbic acid, dicalcium phosphate, choline chloride, magnesium oxide, dried eggs, salmon meal, vitamin E supplement, dried blueberries, marigold extract, dried spinach, dehydrated alfalfa, zinc proteinate, flax seed, folic acid supplement, zinc oxide, iron sulfate, manganese proteinate, L-carnitine supplement, iron proteinate, biotin, copper, proteinate, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, sage, manganous oxide, vitamin A supplement, rosemary extract, pyridoxine hydrochloride, sodium selenite, niacin supplement, riboflavin supplement, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin B12 supplement, calcium iodate, vitamin D3 supplement.

So you can see in one country Royal canin is an utter garbage food, and in another it is a decent food.

Okay then. To clarify, most of their formulas do contain corn and some of them contain wheat. Is that better? [;)]
    • Gold Top Dog
Yes, US Royal Canin is higher quality than European Royal Canin.

Overall, I've heard nothing but good results on Royal Canin US.
    • Gold Top Dog

You never asked for suggestions of a food you could get in China, so that's probably why you didn't get any. ;) I don't think many (if any) of us know what is available over there. If you could give us a list of foods with ingredients that would help greatly. [:)]
    • Gold Top Dog
yeah, i think i could do that... i'd have to "research" a little on that.
i know, you guys don't know what is available here. i was just thinking, if there are any suggestions, i could at least go out, and see if it is available. i also don't know of any local dog food brand here. it's not surprising though, cause the chinese conisder it normal to feed their dog whatever they are eating...

anyways, i will check out what is available, as soon as i have some time (which means after christmas eve [;)]), then get back to you guys on that

    thanks for the input though[:)]
