my dog only eats wet food

Here's my problem with a diet of solely processed commercial food. We discover new nutrients ALL THE TIME. How can they possibly say the food is "100% complete" when we can't possibly know every nutrient necessary for health? It wasn't too many years ago most cats had severe taurine deficiencies...I'm just saying... I don't trust anything that claims they know everything, and that's pretty much what the dog food industry is saying when they state their foods are "100% complete and balanced". An 8 week food trial doesn't prove anything, nor does a dog living X years on a food, when they die of cancer, or are PTS because their quality of life is awful. THAT'S why I will never ever feed solely commercial food again.

All I can contribute is that I tried feeding Wolfie a 100% canned diet since he is only 9.5 lbs, but it gave him constant diarrhea.....one wet food meal a day (instead of two) and one dry food meal cured that.

I don't claim to be a dog food expert.

Just a thought though. My dog had a hard time with dry food around 4 months because of his teeth so I wet it down an made it soft. He ate it them. After his big dog teeth came in he gladly ate it totally hard again. Could this be an issue?

after reading this thread i thought i had figured out a solution to my dogs eating habit. my dog can't/won't eat kibble probably because  half of her teeth are missing (that is my guess) so she has been on canned food only for 2 days. Now a coworker told me that 5 different vets told her that canned food will rot a dogs teeth and it is also very fattening. i told her the kibble i had been feeding has more fat than the canned but now I am concerned about the teeth rotting comment. is it true?!?!?

Teeth don't rot from canned food. It is a myth that kibble cleans teeth. If you want your dog's teeth cleaned bones are good if she's able/willing to chew them. Otherwise a toothbrush is needed.

I've read that as far as the teeth go--it can be genetic.  But, also that the high amount of carbs that are needed for kibble to hold it's shape can make the build up on the teeth worse.

Thanks Willow and Stacita!  I will relay this info to my co worker but it will probably fall on deaf ears. It does make me feel better about my own dog!!

Some people will only listen to a vet's advise  but we know that all of the vets didn't graduate at the top of their class!!
