Why is milk bad?

    Why is milk bad?

Well I'm assuming its bad for dogs because I've never heard of anyone giving dogs milk. I know that with my mom's cats they get diahrea.

Anyhoo my nephew was over the other day and left his glass of milk on the floor when he went to go rinse his plate off. We came back into the living room to see Rory had her nose in his glass which is REALLY strange. She is the best about not begging and I can leave food sitting on the coffee table with her right there and she wont even attempt to get at it. She is really good about this because I never feed her human AT ALL. If anyhting she is wary when I offer her treats but with the milk she was freakin out!
I went to pour it in the sink, she put her paws on the counter and I've never seen her do that before, she then proceeded to go around sniffing everyone's glass and actually begging. I wasnt to happy about this. After every dinner we give her one of her regular treats for being good and not begging and she wanted nothing to do with it. That is a first, she wanted milk really really bad.
I checked her stools the next morning, they were fine and last night she was begging for milk while we ate.
I dont plan on giving her milk even if you all tell its not bad but I know a lot of you give vanilla ice cream as treats. She has had it maybe twice but didnt go crazy for it like milk

If she can handle milk it's fine and actually it's good for her.  Willow gets some all the time.  She doesn't get a huge amount though and I try not to combine dairy products like if she had cheese then she skips the milk.

Well thanks for that, this whole topic has reallt caught me off guard, we have always been such a dog family and this had never really come up.
Also Rory has a ultra sensitive stomach so I thought the milk would reak havoc on her tummy which it surprisingly didnt.
Well at least now I know that if and when I get the guilt about not feeding her any human food I know I have soemthing I can give her. Would soy milk be any better?
    • Gold Top Dog
I've never tried it but I think you are better off avoiding that because from what I've read they don't digest soy well.

BTW--Rory is so beautiful, I love her color.  All I think every time I see that picture is that she should have a collar to match her tongue!!
    • Gold Top Dog
Ah thanks, she shows her tongue a lot, she's weird!

    I, too, love Rory's coloring!

I don't give Ella milk, but I do give her yogurt which she LOVES.
And it has only helped her stools, not harmed them[;)]

I agree. If as you say you never give her "human" food at all[&:] I'm assuming this means NO fresh food at all?? Then a little bowl of milk each evening that she so very obviously loves evidenced by her paws on the counter as she watched you pour it down the sink, isnt going to hurt her.Maybe there's something in the milk that she really craves?

Why not? They all deserve a little spoiling every now and then [:)]

Milk is bad because she's not a baby cow[:D] It's bad for dogs, for all of the same reasons that it's bad for humans. It's a mucous producing food. In most of us, it can excaberate inflamation. It is a very, very common allergen. Casein has even been shown to increase seizure activity, in epileptic dogs.

We very, very rarely eat any dairy products. I did take both girls (individually, they got it ONCE this year) to Bruster's for a doggy sundae, on their birthdays. I figure, once a year, they can have something that's terrible for them (it's full of sugar and all kinds of stuff, and it had a milk bone shoved into the top of it.... neither would eat the fake treat, though;).

I don't think milk is terrible by any means.  I think if your dog has issues then you skip it.  And, just for the record any dairy product including cottage cheese is going to be a mucous producing food.

If your baby handles the milk ok, there is no problem letting her have a small amount now and then. It's usually a problem because of the lactose it contains and it is quickly converted to "simple sugars" (carbs). Just like some people, dogs can be lactose-intolerant, but it's not going to cause health problems in a healthy dog (or person for that matter). Yogurt is a dairy product and so is cheese, the beneficial ingredients in yogurt is "lactobaccillus ..." and others.

It's a rather ridiculous statement to say that milk (dairy) is "bad" for humans, lol. While I will agree that some humans can't handle it, the majority don't have any problems with it. I do understand some people do have "moral" reasons for not consuming animal products however.

It's actually pretty widespread, among alternative practitioners, to reccomend against consuming dairy products. They are *not* good for us, by any means, regardless of your moral convictions. I have no moral convictions against meat, dairy, or any other animal product. I feed Teenie raw and Emma homecooked. They eat plenty of meat[:)] I don't eat any, because it doesn't really agree with my body. I haven't had any in years. I eat eggs, though[;)]

I don't actually give mine milk, but they do enjoy rice pudding which is made with 2 cups cooked rice, 2 cups of milk, 2 eggs, a tad of vanilla and dash of nutmeg.

I would be lost without milk.  I grew on fresh  cow's milk, not the weakened, watered down stuff i have to get at the grocery store now.  Took me ages to get us to that grocery store stuff.  But i certainlly enjoy a glass of milk with chocolate cate, cookies and of all things chili.  i always drink a glass or two of milk when i eat chili.

LOL, the milk "cools off" the chili!

Frankly, I like a COLD beer with my chili [:D]

I don't drink beer...never could get past the smell.  Only stuff I drinks is made with a liquor that I can't smell.  I LOVE frozen pina colada, and a couple of other "fruity" tasting drinks.  hubby and oldes son also drink milk with their chili, youngest drinks ice tea.

I have to drink milk with chocolate and anything spicy, nothing cools your mouth down like a big glass of milk!

As for giving dogs milk, i don't see a problem aslong as they don't have a problem with it. Like any treat, everything in moderation.[;)] Like i said, my dogs get a bowl of milk most nights. They love it and have never shown any adverse affects from it.

Certainly where the op is concerned, where her dogs don't get any "human" foods at all, a little bit of milk surely couldn't hurt??
