Crockpot chicken

Actually I think the majority of the nutrients probably survive pretty well. They may leach out into the broth but since the broth is used to cook the rice they stay contained in the end result.

I don't think you are correct. For example, I believe B vitamins are completely destroyed if heated at 100 degrees or so for longer than 4 hours.

I know some who crock pot most of their meals and I don't think the viatmins are destroyed.  I only crock pot soups and chili and stews as a rule now, but use to do full meals in them when the boys were home.

But how many b vitamins are left in the food, by the time it gets to us? B vitamins are leached out, by stress. Our food is completely stressed out, by the way it is grown and transported. I always add b vitamins to the dogs' food, and I take them every day, too.

I do think between their kibble and cooked, mine are probably getting what they need, but to be on safe side i am give each a doggie multivi vitamin, an EsterC, an vit. E each day, and 2 fish oil on non fish days, and l on days they get fish.  I also give Buck a cranberry cap every day since he had that kidney infection.  I also take all of the above vitamins (i do take human muliti vit. instead of doggie vit), and I also take fiber caps, garlique and a B complex.  Hubby takes the same as me.

On the topic of vitamin loss due to cooking, here's a good link showing which major vitamins are affects by heat and which aren't

Cool link Dunders. THANKS!  So many of the vitamins are not effected by cooking. Vit. C is though.
And I guess if you don't cook it long enough they can't have the bones and that would be missing something then.

Merrick makes a canned food with chicken wings which includes the bones; there website says it's safe because the bones are mushy.

Janice, how interesting,,I didnt' know it!

So, um, I took out this whole chicken and thawed it a couple of days ago.
I tried to cut the darn thing up for Ella to eat raw.
    Yeah...No.
I got the wings and the legs, but the torso area (or whatever the crap it's called) wasn't budging for me.
I don't have a meat cleaver so I couldn't cut through the tiny chicken bones (we SERIOUSLY need new knives).
Anyway, So...I took the remainder of this chicken and put it into my crockpot and added some water and some garlic powder.
I'm thawing out some liver to add tomorrow.
I'll probably get some potatoes tomorrow to add and maybe a sweet potato.

I would have just given it to her raw had I been able to cut it into smaller sections.
Ah well, this will probably have our mouths watering by the time morning rolls around.

What I really like are the plastic crock pot liners.

Those scare me. I can't help but wonder what chemicals leech out of the plastic and into the food. I just throw the crock into the sink, fill it with super hot water and soap, and wipe it out a couple hours later. Or better yet, throw it in the dishwasher when there's room. I never have to scrape anything out of it.

I put chopped up calf liver the pot I made Sunday night--also sweet potatoes, yellow squash, apple, frozen green beans, garlic powder.  They ate on it Mon & Tuesday, last night and tonight (Salmon WEd. night) and have enough for Sat night as they will have salmon again tomorrow night.  I heat it up and as i am dishing into their kibble (on the bar) they are all but shimmying up my legs to get at their bowls.

    Can dogs have asparagus?
    • Gold Top Dog
It wasn't on the No-No list the nutritionalist gave me.

Mine get it, but not much and not often.  When I buy massive amounts in season for the freezer I snip off the ends and that's what goes in a bag for the dogs.  Asparagus is just too toooo yummy to share!

Oh, I got like 4 bunches at one time when it was like, $1.99 per lb.
But it's been in my freezer (I freeze larger quantities like that when I buy fresh) since like, July.
I don't mind sharing it with her this one time, only because I have so much of it.

What else can I get today to add to it? So far I'm going to add asparagus, carrots, and liver.
