I haven't tried them I don't think or if I did it was for Ollie and it was before the Greenies scare.  They look the same, and seem the same as Greenies so I don't think I would buy them,,BUT I think it was wheat gluten that caused all the trouble in Greenies. Unless wheat startch is the same as wheat gluten,,,then I guess they are different.

My dog really loves these.  They are similar to greenies, but the heads don't pop off like greenie heads do, so I feel better about feeding them.  He also likes them a lot more than greenies for some reason.

Greenies are dangerous to feed to dogs...

Does anyone know what ingredient makes the Greenies so dangerous?  I like the Nutri-Dent ingredients better as far as these things go.

Wheat gluten was the problem with Greenies.
Do we think that wheat starch is the same as wheat gluten???
    • Gold Top Dog
Well, I THINK wheat starch is gluten free, so there must be a difference. . .I'm checking. . .

A starch derived from wheat. Also known as non-glutinous flour and wheaten cornflour, wheat starch is the by-product when gluten (derived from wheat protein) is made.

NOPE,,guess they are not the same.  So hopefully that means they are not as dangerous as Greenies.

So, do you think it was the gluten that wasn't breaking down properly??  I looked closely at them today and they have a little different consistency than Greenies.  Greenies are sort of gooey and these seem similar yet less so.  I'm always afraid to give her anything with a rubbery type consistency.  I always stick with the chews that are more crumbley.  But, I do need something I can pick up on a weekly basis.

It just stinks that I can't have fun buying her different things, either she's allergic (which of course cannot be helped) or they are garbage or they could be dangerous.  I look at things and go, nope she can't have that, it's got chicken, nope, can't have that might cause a blockage, nope, can't have that the ingredients are horrible. . .

Hi, I'm new to this board but have been visiting it since April. Just wanted to let you know that I have been giving Nutri Dent chews to my dogs for about 3 months. They are small dogs (shih tzu). My puppy is 6 1/2 months old and it takes her 3 to 4 days to finish a piece. Each time I remove it from her after maybe 45 mins. My other dog is 18 months old and I let her finish the whole piece. She chews on it faster than the puppy, and the pieces that come off  the chews are very small. No problems so far and they both absolutely love it!!  I have not fed them Greenies, because like you I thought the Nutri Dent have better ingredients (plus I've heard all the horror stories about Greenies). If your dog is a chewer and not a gulper, nutri dent shouldn't be a problem IMO. I still keep an eye on my dogs with the Nutri Dent, but I am paranoid with everything I give them anyway. There has been a couple of times when my older dog swallowed the end bit of the chew (about 1/4" long) and I was worried but she was fine so that tells me that the chew is highly digestible and I am more relaxed when giving them the chews now. There is also no change with their poops the day after. Hope this helps, and good luck![:)]

Emma used to love them, and they never caused her tummy troubles. They started triggoring seizures, though (wheat is one of the big things to avoid, I've since learned), so I stopped using them. I used to buy big bags of them, at Walmart.

I use to feed Lucky greenies until I read all the horror stories.  Plus it made his poop green and gooey [:'(] lol.  Luckily, he never ate the head of the greenies.  I am going to try nutri-dent though.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I kind of got the idea that it wasn't a specific ingredient in greenies that made them dangerous, but the fact that they could break apart - dogs could swallow pieces and get blockages from them.
