    Is Beef bad for dogs?

I e-mailed Canidae for a sample of their kibble and mentioned that my puppy loves the Innova EVO 95% Beef (canned).  They e-mailed me back that beef is not really good for dogs and that the EVO was too rich!  Who is right on this one?  Is beef bad for dogs?  Should I not feed the EVO to my puppy?  I am really confused.  I'm new to all this and there are so many choices out there.  What should I do?

I am not a food expert, but I have NEVER heard that beef is bad for dogs.

Most dogs do very well on beef according to the Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog.

I wouldn't worry about feeding beef to your pup - it will be fine.  I thought they had to be over a certain age for EVO though...(I remember reading something - but someone else will be able to help.)

I had heard that, too but I thought it applied only to large breed puppies.  I e-mailed Innova about it last week but haven't gotten a reply.  My puppy is a 6 month old maltese/poodle mix.

dry EVO has around 3% calcium dry weight, which can cause bone growth disorders if fed to puppies- usually symptomatic only in large breeds, but to be safe don't feed dry EVO to any puppy.

However, the CANNED 95% meat EVO has 1.7% calcium dry weight, which is PERFECT for growing puppies.

Beef is NOT bad for dogs.  Mine eat it regulary in their homecooked and are happy and healthy.

The only problem I can think of with beef is its  higher levels of arachidonic acid, which is thought to promote inflammation. So it may not be a good choice for an older , arthritic dog. Mattie eats plenty of beef, no problems at all.

I've been feeding Gobi beef since I've had him, not that long but he is doing much better on a mix of beef and kibble. The only problem I could see is if you give raw beef with a lot of the fatty tallow stuff, pretty much the same as us humans to much of that isn't good for us either...

Every dog I have ever had has been fed beef, all live long healthy lifes. It may only be if they have an intolerence to beef. I have never heard of this.

Beef is not bad for dogs at all (unless they have an allergy to it, which is rare).  It is one of the most nutrient-rich meats you can find (and in this case, rich is a good thing).

Frankly, I find it in rather poor taste that Canidae gave such a response. Here is someone wanting to know what their food has to offer, and they resort to scare tactics to keep some one from feeding another brand of food. That really sounds more like something Solid Gold would do (no offense to those feeding it).

Did they offer to send samples?

Wow, I'm really confused now.  I have a 7 year old lab who has an allergy to poultry.  Anytime we feed her chicken based anything she throws up yellow stuff and spends large amounts of time eating grass.  This was made worse when we tried a raw diet.  So, we have to feed her red meat based foods.  She especially likes the EVO RM formula by Innova.  We also feed her the EVO beef, venison, and rabbit canned foods.  I can't see how it can be bad for her when it has done so much good for her.  She has put on weight, and her coat looks a million times better.  From personal experience, I'm going to say that Canidae is wrong on this one.  My lab ate one sample package of the Canidae and then wouldn't touch it again.

I have also noticed that when buying food for our dogs, we have to go to different stores.  It seems that you can't get Canidae and Innova at the same store.  Maybe it would be safe to say that they are main competition for each other and that this is all it boils down to???

NOTE:  I do feed a Canidae/EVO RM mixture to my dachshund puppies and they also have had remarkable improvements.  I can't feed them straight RM formula as it does seem a bit too much for them.

If beef was "really no good for dogs" why didnt they tell you why?I guess they were hoping you would take their word for it and switch from evo onto their foods?? Saying Evo is too rich is a very blanket statement! It may be too rich for one dog,but the next 10 may do just fine.
FTR my dogs do great on all of evo products, and get fresh beef regularly,i've never had any problems.
The only reason i can think of for the negative statement against beef is maybe because they are slaughtered much later in life than chickens etc and have more time to build up toxins and such. This is probably a very far out reason though!

Tsk Tsk on Canidae..they should have promoted their own food and left comments about other companies out of the conversation. I feed beef to my dogs in rotation and have never had an issue.

Yikes, then I must be killing my dog (who is doing beautifully on a mostly beef diet, since it's the only protein I KNOW she does well on). Silly Canidae. How dare they make broad blanket statements like that. Makes me glad my cats aren't eating Felidae anymore, honestly...
