Dyan,
In and of itself,I don't think the food would go rancid in a week's time. I think it would take several weeks for the Vit C levels to start dropping down. But, that makes me think of another point. I know, even with my glass container, that I wash it on a regular basis. Maybe every 3 weeks. Because
whatever you use regularly to store food in will start picking up rancid molecules and I think that can contaminate the good, fresh food that just got poured into the container.
I agree it's totally easier to get the food out of a wide opening such as a plastic container versus opening the bag and sticking your arm down that bag to get to the food at the bottom! But, all in all, I would still keep the food in the original bag and put that bag in the plastic container. That way the fresh new bag doesn't come into contact with the storage container that used to hold food.
Sometime I think that we "think" things thru tooo much, and sometimes I just want to say "they are
dogs. and they can handle it". And yes, that's true. Lots of dogs survive (but not necessarily thrive) with such things that we sometimes give thought to.
But, with plastic, I'm kinda funny about that because I have read so much about how the plastic that we drink out of , or heat things up in, leach chemicals into
our foods. Having this knowledge, I am more aware of this affect with our dogs. And, I have spoken to a store owner who had problems with customer whose food was going rancid quickly simply b/c of this issue.
And also, because so many of us have had health issues with our dogs, I think we are, and should be, hyper-viligant because there are so many things that might affect one of our dogs that wouldn't "appear" to affect the general dog community. I think if you choose not to keep the food inside the orginal bag inside of the container, then I think you should at least be rinsing out the container frequently. (although, personally, I'm not comfortable with that [sm=happy.gif]
